Was hoping to track down our first boat, CP16 (now sailing her younger sister!)

Now that we have returned to sailing (see "No Mas has new home" in the lounge) and have mostly documented No Mas' history we regret not keeping up with our first boat, a Compac 16. Here is all we know, she was sold to a professor I believe in the Environmental Sciences department at the University of Virginia in 1990. She was living on her trailer at our new little farm in Whitehall when he came to trailer it away. My two year old was more sad than us and we never saw her again.

So this is a huge long shot, but maybe someone here has or knows of a CP16 that has some glimmer of this history. Would love to trace her history, her ownership is still helping direct our lives. Sailing again!

Mas

Update 5/18/17-still would love to find our first one but are sailing another 16 again after 26 years.  :)

No Mas:
Maybe if you posted the hull number, that might help. It would be exciting for you to be reunited.

Mas

Sadly we have no record of her HIN. She was bought used, (sticky section on why ur compac found you, No Mas) and have no paper trail at all.

Mostly hoping some one here has a boat where this piece of her history rings a bell. Bought in Florida, sailed on Chesapeake, sold Charlottesville, Va. area about 1990 to the best of my recollection to an UVa. fellow in Envisci.

Never know.

Still fishing for any leads here. Saw a CP16 sitting on a trailer in Killmarnack, not sure of spelling, as we were passing through. Reminded me to repost.

HIN is molded into hull. Usually on transom. No boat leaves the factory without one!

Here's a long shot. I purchased my 1983 CP-16 from Keith Scott's Sailboat Company in 2010. I understood at the time that the previous owner was a female who lived in Virginia. The boat name was Seagull, which I haven't changed.

Wish we had the hull number, sure would make this easier, but alas we do not. Good chance she has been bought and sold more than once since we sold her 25 years ago. All I know for sure was that she was sold in Charlottesville Va. about 1990. Good chance however that any CP16 with a Charlottesville history was ours.

MHardy, the picture of your boat shows a bow pulpit which our boat did not have. We figure she was a Mk1. Only 3 stays, no pulpit, no winches, no electrical, galvanized ez tilt trailer.

I thought they all had a bow pulpit, it was the later versions that included a bowsprit as well?

Mas

yup, thats what i meant! the pic shows a pulpit, it also looks like they added spreaders and another stay as they changed models. Our little 16 had no pulpit and only three stays, no spreaders. Probably a late 70's model. might help in narrowing down the search!

Well it must be the late night last night because I truly meant NO BOW SPRIT! Keep saying pulpit. Maybe that's what we get for not getting in front of a pulpit today, Sunday! So to be clear finally, our 16 had no BOW SPRIT but you are correct all had pulpits.

My '83 is a Mk1 - no spreaders. The bowsprit and gallows were later additions.

So any idea as to the Virginia history? A Charlottesville location would be huge as never ever seen one here or for sale here, other than ours.

Was your CP-16 titled in Virginia? If so, was the decal renewed annually?
The DMV or agency issuing the title and annual decal may have a record under your name. The record probably includes the HIN.
$UM FUN TOO

CP-16 Hull# 2886

know this is kinda lame, but we were so clueless that we were not sure we ever registered her here. 16 foot sailboat with no motor, at first anyway. Think she was sold after 6 years not ever having been registered. We are now looking for some old photos as i remember, kinda, that there was a Florida registration number. If so might help with HIN, though this is long before computer record keeping. This is becoming an interesting endeavor. Would be fun to find her again!

Gotta admit, it has been a long time since sailing that little boat and we had no clue that the CP16 wasn't even being made anymore! The single most successful boat Hutchins ever made. Kinda curious why no longer in production? Just to simple, to traditional, to easy to rig, to easy to launch, to easy to sail, to seaworthy held value to well, ??? I see them listed for what we paid for one in 1983ish. got all of our money back after 6 years of sailing her. Hmmm...better stop waxing about her. Got her big sister now.

will keep you all posted, and if i can find a picture will scan it and try to figure out how to post it here.

thanx
