Was hoping to track down our first boat, CP16 (now sailing her younger sister!)

She will return to you when she's ready, No Mas.

true nuff! It's just difficult when you put a child up for adoption like we did 25 years ago, as you always wonder if she has had a good home. We already were her second set of parents. Heck she already is over 36 years old!

Ok, found a bunch of pictures and sure enough we never reregistered her from Florida. Her Fl. # was FL 1609 EE. This was the first owner's number. Trying to reach the agency responsible for such and hope they have a record of this number and the HIN. Her sails have # 1270 and they are(were) the original sails.

As soon as i figure out how to get a scanned photo form my computer to this forum will post a picture!

Salty19

Well there you go.  Hull # 1270.  Sail number=hull number.

Thanx Salty19, i never made the connection about her sails being he same number as her hull.

Wow, i would have figured less of number given her age but now just gotta see if anyone here has her. Guess checking the registry would be a good place to start. wonder if the Game and Inland fisheries folks can reverse search for owner if given just a hull number?

Cursory glance at registry and did not see #1270, though i am still nursing coffee and the hull #'s are a little hard to figure. Assume the first letters are the Hutchin's designation and then the next series of numbers is the actual number of that model boat built to date and thus the identifying number for a specific boat of any given similar model?

If you contact Gerry Hutchins at ComPac and ask the HIN of CP 16#1270, I think you will get an answer. With the HIN you will know the year and month of construction.

Hey Carry-on, that would be a good way to nail down that info, mostly am trying to locate her again. Gerry may have had someone reach out with questions on the boat but doubt he knows who owns her now, never know though.

I think Hutchins will be able to match the #1270 to the HIN. With the HIN you could try through the registering agencies mid Atlantic to Southeast. Could spend $40 for a boatfax search. I think Bob 23 is correct.

The CP 16 molds were probably weary after 3000 hulls resulting in a decision to retool for the 16 or make some adjustments resulting in a new model, The Legacy.

Hey Carry-On, good suggestion. will start with the phone call to Hutchin's. They are so great to work with. Then a call to the Virginia Game and Inland Fisheries folks since she was last owned in Virginia.

I suspect you are right. Still, the CP 16 is such a great design....

Alright Hutchin's obviously did not have computer record keeping back in 1980 (the most likely year of our 16) but after looking through some known boats we determined it to be a 1980. The photo's showed a number of 1270 on the mainsail, which we learned from Salty19 was more than likely the hull number. The Hutchins folks indicated that they DID NOT place such numbers on all of their boat sails, but some were and 1270 kinda matches up with what we do know about her approximate year.

The hull number is a combination of Hutchins ID,  ABV
                                                   production #   1270
   month as a letter (i.e. January=A, Feb=B, etc)    ?
month and year as 3 digits (i.e. July 1980=780)    ?80  (more than likely an 80 build year)

so here is what we have: ABV1270??80

Hope this helps folks understand the way the HIN's were done and hopefully help ring a bell out there for someone to check their HIN if they have a CP16 from about that year. Still on the trail!

so just realized the HIN was explained already on the forum. The only difference was the letter for the month. The lady I spoke with indicated that January was A, but the explanation here indicates that July is A. Both make sense as one is the calendar year and the other the fiscal year. Also there were 0's in front of the number of the boat to allow for expansion. i.e. 594=00594, or in our case 1270=01270

At the New Year thought would keep alive our search for our first boat CP16 Hull # 1270

Happy New Years all!

Well we are still looking for our first 16 but life has stirred the pot of boat ownership more than once and the final thing to float to the top of the pot was another 16 in our lives. She is an 87 Mk11 little used, fresh water, garage kept one owner until this spring. We are thinking of giving her her first name as she has never had one all these years. Mas! If anyone knows our story this fits.

JRNIPKANM could become,
