Hey Dave, I am now sure ours was not one of those 10 if Keith is accurate. Our HIN indicates #2508. Maybe they did a 2500 tan edition as well. You have an 87 Mk!? ours is an 87 Mk 11. Puzzling . What's ur HIN?

You gunna plan on coming to the CBMWG event? We are so pleased to have a 16 again. 

Well Dave spoke to Rich today at Hutchins. I does seem they cranked out a run of "the earth tones so popular in the day" about the time ours were brought into this world.
You have a Mark 2, and our boats were possibly being born at the same time. We are within 19 boats of each other. With you in Lynchburg and Mas home, we otta go bother Tim!

Well with all of the buzz about the CBMWG 2.0 and work on our PSC now that she is on the hard, 'Mas' our CP16, has been sitting up here on our little farm, far from the bay, under a tarp, wondering what happened to all of the water and warm weather. I am still looking for our first CP16 (hull #1270) just cuz but did track down the original and mostly only owner since she was new of our new to us this past September 87' MkII CP16 (a second owner had her for 5 months before we got her). It seems she was sailed some on weekends on Smith Mountain Lake and Lake MooMaw for about 10 years and garage kept in-between those trips. The owner and his wife then stopped sailing (his first mate got a little scared in a storm) and she sat unused in his garage for almost 20 years till this past spring when he decided the space could be best used by something else. That explains the almost new condition of everything. I had asked him what kind of polish he had used cuz you could see your face in the gelcoat shine, he said none. This boat has been in a time capsule it appears. It now is incumbent upon us to keep her looking like she was just hatched.

She really needs nothing but we are gunna get a mainsail cover for her (if anyone knows of one for sale reach out) and she still has the original flat plate rudder we have been used to. Am considering a foiled rudder but am not sure what kind of a difference it would make on a CP16 MkII. Any thoughts there would be appreciated from other CP16 owners. Also still wondering what happened that first boat of ours that started all of this.

What kind of foiled rudder do you have? Is it one of those Ida types? Also, you will need to clear your calendar for CBMWG! Know you had been threatening to get your 16 down to that neck of the woods for a little salt water foray, so this will give you the opportunity to check it out and add to the already epic collection of folks of dubious character that are attending!

I have an Ida, it came with the boat.  It is a joy.  Remember to tighten up the lock nuts on the rudder and then back up the lock nuts.  The originals will eventually slip and loosen resulting in lop sided wear requiring inserts to get the play out of the rudder.  I think just replacing the old nylon insert lock nuts with double standard nuts is the best way to go. Grease the moving parts first, tighten the first set of nuts to just slightly dragging, then lock them with the second set of nuts.

Thanks so much for the response Dave. Much treasure is being being spent for the anticipated and ongoing work on Interlude while she is on the hard so will have to see if there is money left in the budget for a new rudder for Mas. Since I have never sailed a 16 with a foiled rudder at least i don't know what I am missing! Everyone does say it makes a big difference so hoping she will sport one this year. Sorry you are unable to join all of us at CBMWG but lets do plan to sail some!

Well have a few sails under our belt with the new Ida rudder and even switched it back out for part of a day to compare again. A couple notes come to mind, yes she does point a little higher now, though the increased headsail from the Mk1 to a Mk2  was a bigger change to address weather helm. Now she has just the right amount! I don't like the fact the new rudder wishes to float thus must keep the pivot bolt clamped pretty hard. I did check to see if it would kick up still if a grounding occurred and it will if tightened just the right amount! It is a quieter sail too.

Great day yesterday once the wind made up it's mind and once it did it got a mind set quickly. Almost buried a rail not being mindful of a gust that i could clearly see coming but figured was just another of the brief puffs we had for a couple hours. No so, got my attention!

Well we have more and more been very grateful to have this 16 in our lives yet still keep an eye out for the one that taught us sailing, just to know what happened to her. Hopefully she was out yesterday as well.

oh....and she acquitted herself well out distancing a Precision 23 on more than one point of sail, in light and variable then becoming steady 10 plus. Jus sayin!

Well all the talk about Bob maybe getting a 16 in Springfield reminded me to put this out there again. Even though we are sailing another 16 now we are still curious what happened to the little 16 that taught us sailing over 35 years ago. Bought used in Florida around 1980, sailed on the Chesapeake till 1989, and sold in Charlottesville about 1990. Hull number 1270.

If any of you fellow 16 owners have her or know about her reach out, would love to know she is still out there doing what she always did, sail.
