No Mas has new home.

Well first time back sailing after 25 years! We are excited and hope to meet other Compac owners in our area. (Deltaville, Topping, Va.) We cut our teeth on a Compac 16 with no electronics. lights, plumbing, wenches (no lady's would volunteer), or motor (my wife insisted we get one after a close call sailing into dock in 15knot wind without one!). We are now the new owners of a CP23D "No Mas". She has sailed Lake Superior, Alaska, Sea of Crotez and most recently Gulf of Mexico, Chesapeake Bay, Maine coast.. The pervious owners had done many upgrades and she is truly a proper little yacht. Currently she is on her trailer getting winterized, engine flushed and oil changed, some small maitenance items and new bottom paint this spring before she goes into her slip and the adventures begin!

Well this thread has done double duty as "No Mas" has a new home yet again since this intro, as she works her way around North America! Her new owner is planning to keep her on the Maine coast. If he ever sells her we are hoping she goes to the lakes so she can complete her circumnavigation! (the updates are in bold above) Meanwhile "Mas" a CP16 came into our lives along with a big sister "Interlude" a PSC31. This should help keep this making sense.....well maybe a little!

It is great to hear from another Chesapeake Bay Sailor.

Saga (1989 Compac 23/3) is kept in Colonial Beach, VA.  I make it out to the bay a few times a year for a cruise.  I haven't been to Deltaville in a few years but it is a fun place to visit and sail. 

You have some great sailing grounds.  Close to home you have Urbanna.  You also have Tangier, Onancock, and Smith Island.  All of those are great cruises.  There are other anchorages close by in the Great Wicimico, Indian Creek, Little Wicimico, and a few other places.

Maybe we will pass by sometime!

Thanks! We spend a season sailing out of Colonial Beach as well before we moved our little 16 to the Deltaville area. My wife's brother has a small cottage there and the CP16 was only so much fun to stay on for days with it's primitive set-up! We hoisted kerosine anchor lights, had stick on steaming lights and no head! What a wonderful wife. Love the new creature comforts of No Mas.

I have to say that I do envy your diesel.  I am trying to get use to an outboard but coming from a diesel, I miss the range a lot.  I tend to do a lot of longer cruises in the Chesapeake Bay and the outboard can be a bit of a problem.  Unfortunately, in the Chesapeake Bay, especially in the summer, we do a lot more motoring that we would care to admit!

Make sure you get over to Tangier Island this coming year and visit Park's Marina.  Place is cheap to visit but very neat to look around.  It is a true gem of the Chesapeake Bay.  Smith Island is also worth the cruise over and you can make a cool circuit by doing Tangier to Chrisfield, Chrisfield to Smith Island, Smith Island to home (or something similar).  I try to keep my jaunts under 30 miles, especially in the smaller boat single handed.

I hear you on the benefit of diesel. We are excited by the project of being able to motor for an extended period if needed. She has a 12 gallon fuel tank and Gerry at Hutchins indicates we should expect a quart an hour with a 5knot steaming speed. With that said, we hope to continue the tradition of this boat's extensive cruising history with little motor time (352 hours on a 1990 yanmar). We are very excited about exploring the thousands of miles of shoreline the Chesapeake has to offer. We believe that the CP23's are the perfect choice, if you wish no CB to deal with, to explore such wonderful cruising grounds. I am looking forward to meeting other CP owners on "the bay'!

Have always admired the custom work done on No Mas.  We are on Mill Creek in Wake (a few miles up the Rivah from DVL) sailing Beagle 3, our 1990 CP23. It is on the trailer at our home. We had her at Horn Harbor on the Great Wicomico for the last two years, but are thinking of keeping her closer to home next season. What marina are you at?

Yep, got the feeling that a Chesapeake Compac owners meeting might just be the ticket as we head into spring. Let's keep reaching out for others and stay in touch. Meanwhile, since she she is so new for me, i suspect that though she is going to live on her trailer under a cover till bottom painting and launching in April, I will be sneaking down to putz about.

Count me in for a C23 owners get-together!!  In fact, we have to do this- Bob23 and those Yankees up on Barnegat Bay can't have all the fun! We should challenge them to a PBR drinking contest, and barring that, they could sail down to the Chesapeake to defend their honor in feats of sailing derring-do!!  Really, though, we should get together socially in the coming off-season at Willoughby's, Merroirs, Something Different, or any eating establishment of anyone's choice, just to compare notes on things Compac and sailing in general. Let's get in touch and set something up. Any taker's?

Where is the middle point for all of us?

I am located in Woodbridge, VA. 

Tappahannock is about 30-40 minutes west of Deltaville.  It is about 30-40 minutes from where I keep the boat (Colonial Beach).  That could be a possible point but finding a suitable place to eat may be challenging. 

I bet that there are other Compacs in Northern Virginia that aren't on here.  There has to be.  There are also several Compac 27 that I have heard of.  One is for sale at Olverson's marina.  My Uncle told me of one in Deltaville at a marina he had some boat work done at.

Count me in as well! Merrior has a great draft beer list, and we are great draft beer drinkers! Know we will be down to get the winter cover on No Mas when the winterizing and a few maintenance items are done, not sure when. Look forward to starting a regular thing with us crazy small boat types. Maybe work towards having a Compac cruise, spend the night kinda thing in the spring. I clearly will be needing time to learn No Mas as our 16 had no winches, only hank on sails, no electric and a bucket for plumbing. Not sure i will even know how to sail/rig her at first till i learn the rigging. Unfortunately they had me cornered in a closing when it was derigged and the survey was completed. Oh well, just part of the new excitement over her ownership.!

HeaveToo if you goggle Topping Va. you have where we are, also peterg who is only a couple miles away and Merrior can be googled as well. It is associated with the Rappahanock Oyster folks. It is about 20-30 minutes west of Deltaville right on Locklies Creek.

obtw, know there was a Compac 27 in the same marina as us but we missed them by two days, gone to Florida. maybe they are migratory! hurricane season and hot weather sends folks scurrying back north in the summer.

I know that in the Spring/Summer a good place to meet could be Smith Creek near Point Lookout, VA.  There is a good place in the back to raft up (plenty of protection), good scenery, and a marina not too far from it.  The marina is Point Lookout Marina.

I tend to anchor out and stay away from marinas.  Saga is set up with some good ground tackle (22lb Lewmar and 30' of 1/4" chain). 

Anyway, that is 30 miles from Colonial Beach and close to 30 miles from Deltaville.  I usually do a cruise around the end of May so that may be a good time frame.

As far as a winter meet-up; I am in NOVA so going near Deltaville is a long haul.  Tappahannock wouldn't be too bad (40 minutes for you guys and 1.5 hours from me) but I am curious to see how many other sailors would actually show up.
