Well, it's finally here. The famous Barnegat Bay Bash 2012 is tentatively being planned for the last weekend in July at Tices Shoals, Island Beach State Park in the beautiful state of NJ! And, just for the record- cast from the "Jersey Shore" are not allowed so rest assured. If this date is agreeable to JT, Marty and whoever might be available, we'll keep it. If not, any other dates work better? As you can tell, it's pretty flexible.
Itinerary: none. To say this is a loosely planned event is an understatement. Ocean swimming at Tice's is great- no lifeguards, and fires are allowed on the beach. The lack of rules makes one wonder if one is still in NJ! We have in the past, rafted up together, shared some food, drink and exchanged sailing lies. Maybe if we all agree, we can plan a race but, hey, that sounds like work and this weekend ain't about work.
At the very first BBB, I had the pleasure of meeting PeterG and Admiral Becky who, at the time sailed the Beagle, CP 19. We remain friends to this day, occasionally getting together to share good old NJ pizza and a bottle of vino.
So, whadayasay, gents? That date ok? I'd be arriving on Friday afternoon and staying till I feel like leaving, Sunday maybe.

Well Bob,  You did it! you picked a weekend that portends mighty big doings at SML.  The other seadogs (grandkids) and I will be parlaying at my dock, so I and S'Go can't be THAAAAAARRRR! note my avatar change.

Bob - Last wkend in July is fine, but you already knew that! I'm pretty flexible after the 3rd week in July - 1st wkend in August works for me as well. Just glad that it's gonna happen! The "secret" k-project is dragging out very sloooowly. Still don't have permits. I'll probably be dealing with all that through the rest of June and all of July! Things will probably get pretty "testy" around here on occasion. See ya on the Bay!

Ok. So it's penciled in for the last weekend in july. That should give me plenty of time to finish my winter projects. I plan to be in the end of next week...I hope! Stay tuned for more info. And TG,
Sorry for the schedule conflict. Wish you could be there... I'd be nice to have an authentic pirate attend.

sounds like a plan!    just got back from maine..    totally inspired about sailing the maine coast someday!   but, in the meantime,  barnegat bay is pretty awesome..  jt

Bob,
There is a chance that Admiral Suzie and I would be able to make the BBB 2012 if there is a place for a couple of sailors "in training" and an Eclipse that has never tasted salt.  Next week we will be at Seneca Lake for a full week at a B&B that has their own dock on the lake.  We have taken her out 10 times now but we are really excited to have a full week to dedicate to sailing.  The BB Bash will be the following weekend after our return so it is uncertain if we can swing it or not.  The Bay is a short 4 hr. drive for us and we would be humbled to be able to join some real sailors.

hi Allen,   of course i can't speak for bob.. but  it sure would be cool if you guys can make it!    seneca lake sounds awesome.    where are you folks located?    we are in north east pa.    this will be my first time attending the bash  ( i prefer to call it a gathering, but i am not about to rain on bob's parade  :)  )

have a wonderful time in ny, and hope you can make it to barnegat bay - it really is a great place to sail.    we are located at shore point marina in bayville / pine beach  area.      take care,  jt

Eagleye

Thanks JT,
We live near Catskill, NY about 30 miles south of Albany.  We will have to see where we stand when we get back from vacation.  There are a lot of home front commitments that we will have to catch up on but we will certainly give it a try (providing we can find the proper obligatory gift for Bob.) :)    Any suggestions?

Actually, JT:
Barnegat Bay Gathering has a nice ring to it. BBG 2012...I like it. But in the interest on minimal confusion, we'll stick to BBB 2012.
I've been busy at work this week; didn't get the time off I was hoping for. Oh well. Today was gonna be a total sailing day but, alas, one phone call can change everything.
Allen:
Are you asking for suggestions for the obligatory gift for me? Aw, shucks- you don't need to go to such trouble...but since you asked:  I like BMW R-series motorcycles...older ones. I also have a fondness in my heart for older Porsche 911's and I really like the 912. Perhaps my favorite sports car of all time would be the AC Cobra- with 427 engine, if you please. Being more practical, I'd go for a Volvo P-1800 wagon.
But on a simpler note: A can or 2 of Pabst will do just fine. Heck, when am I gonna have time to ride the bike or find parts for the Porsche? I'd make good use of the Volvo, though.
Honest, I'll update here as we get closer to the date.  I hope someone shows up this year but if not, I'm gonna have the time of my life disconnecting from the crazy world of work and schedules and whining customers. My first order of business: take off my watch for the weekend!
More soon!!!

Bob,
You are way to modest.   We will work on finding the BMW.....but I'm not sure if they sell PBR in upstate NY.  :)

We will be on vacation (sailing) next week and will be out of touch with email or Internet. "Perfect!"

Thanks for your efforts.

Bob,

Now you've gone and done it! You baited your line with Volvos AND BMW's! I had a 1954 R51/3 way back when (we're talking early '60's here). Bought it for $400, sold it for $400. It was great while I had it - lots of stories... are you ready?

BTW, I saw one with exposed drive shaft, stick shift and sidecar (exactly the same as mine, except I didn't have a sidecar!) go for $17,000 at the New Hope Auto Show about 10 - 15 years ago.

P.S. My oldest son, Michael, is planning to "build" a Cobra. He just painted a real show stopper (he reps for a BASF distributor) a few weeks ago. Got to see it on display at a Cobra gathering in Washington Crossing State Park, PA about 3 weeks ago.

BBB 2012 update:
Tice's Shoals is where we plan to meet. In the interest of full disclosure, I offer the following info: Tice's Shoals, or what we refer to as Tice's, is located on Island Beach State Park. It's kept in quite a natural state but there are bathrooms and a wooden walkway from the bay to the beach. Great swimming in the mighty North Altlantic and if there are waves, good body surfing. There are no lifeguards, to the best of my knowledge. There are bathrooms (no showers) there also. There are no eating facilities there so be prepared to bring what you want to eat and drink.
On the minus side, it can get crowded but I plan to anchor considerably south of the main concentration of yahoos. Water depth is fine for us 23's and there is a very minimal tidal range there, about 1 1/2 feet or so. Depending on the weather, there can be a considerable number of morons (read: powerboaters and jetskiiers) but we will not let them bother us, eh?
You can check out this chart and it may help.
http://www.charts.noaa.gov/OnLineViewer/12324.shtml
See that lattitude line on the chart? Well, that's where the small deck and walkway over to the ocean are. I'll be anchoring a bit to the south, at  North 39 degrees 49.6' and West 074 degrees 05.7'. Or just over the 3 foot depth mark to the south of the horse shoe shaped area of deeper water to the right of the lattitude line. Got it? Yup. People usually get lost when I give them directions.
I'm gonna sail up on Friday afternoon, spend the night, and hope to be there all day Saturday. I'll be monitoring ch. 16 on the VHF and I'll bring the handheld to the beach if I decide to swim Friday afternoon.
Well, that's about it. As you might have guessed, if the weather really goes to stink, that might alter our plans but hopefully it'll be a great weekend. It would be nice to raft up together for dinner or lunch but let's figure that out when we get there. If anyone plays a guitar and knows some songs, I'll bring my bongos.
   Ciao!

Smier

I just finished checking out Tice Shoals on my Navionics app, looks like a great spot!  I so wish I could make it, it will definitely be on my list of places to go soon.  One quick question, where is the nearest recommended boat launch?

jthatcher

hey , i just bought a ukulele..  i would love to bring it along, but i only know 4 chords :(   on the other hand..   maybe i could invite my brother to come along.   he likes to sail, but i have yet to get him on the boat!   i guess he is too busy.    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u30HFeQLosY&feature=plcp

He's Hired!!!! That would make Eric Clapton jealous.
You only know 4 chords on the other hand, how many do you know on the other other hand?
Haha...One could do a lot with 4 chords...just think of George Thorogood!
Maybe Marty can play his classic P1800 kazoo!
