Doing a rough head count, looks like about 6 of us. Me, JT, Marty, Tim, Smier, and Allen (Eagle Eye). Tomorrow, Lord willing, I'll sail to Tice's and overnight there with my buddy Dennis (Morgan 30) and take some current photos so you guys can see what your getting yourself into. And hopefull, again Lord willing, the weather will be most wonderful. September is a great month to sail around here: weather is a bit cooler, the feel of fall is in the air, and most of the yahoos with Jet skis have either gone back to college or high school.
Lately, the Barnegat Bay up that was has been unusually clean and green. Over at Tice's that means crystal clear water. Now I know what you guys are thinking: Yeah, right, clear water in NJ. But, it's true. It may be the close proximity to the Barnegat Inlet that flushes it out well.
I'm thinking of designing T shirts for this most festive event. Any ideas are welcome. I may enlist my sons friend who is an artist. A bit of a twisted mind, but a nice fellow and great artist.
Lets see...I feel like posting a photo...what shall it be? How about a BBB 2011 sunset?

Stay tuned...Bob23

One week to go!  Any updates on ramp and parking info?  Progress has been slow(actually nonexistent), I hurt my back at work and haven't been able to do much except order some things for the boat.  Looks like it will be a marathon to get ready for next weekend.

I'd be interested in going too. But the ramps that I've used on Barnegat are not that good. Examples include Ocean Gate Yacht Basin (too short, all gravel beyond low tide line, and huge holes caused by prop wash) and Barnegat City ramp (next to Mariners Marina - way too short and you launch into the main channel). I've checked out others which are just as bad or worse with prop washes on anything made of gravel, sand or dirt. I'll probably be singlehanded and can't do these shorter ramps by myself. The boat winds up sticking out into no-mans land, or the trailer vanishes into the holes. Any ideas?

I'm spoiled now - the ramp at Manasquan Reservoir is 80 feet long, all concrete, and around 5 lanes wide. And it's fresh water.

CapnRon,

What are you driving (sailing)? I'm planning on launching my CP16 from Up The Creek Marina in Bayville. Done it a few times already. No problem.

Well, the BBB 2012 version  2.0 is just about upon us and the weather forecast looks good. It'll get down to the 60's at night so it could be a bit chilly aboard overnight so bring what ever comfy covers you prefer. I overnighted at Tice's Shoals on 8/30 to 8/31 and slept out in the cockpit under clear skies and a rising moon...very nice.
Thank you Marty for sharing info on the ramp where you launch. I met Marty there last year and it looks great. I've been searching for some local ramp info and was going to suggest the Barnegat Public ramp that Capt Ron mentioned, but not being a ramp sailor, was not informed as to it's negatives. Here's a picture of it:

I've checked with the harbormaster there and overnight parking is ok. It is located in East Bay Ave., Barnegat, NJ exactly 3.2 miles east of Garden State Parkway exit 67, which, when navigated properly, will put you on Bay Avenue heading East. Here is a less then helpful link to the Township of Barnegat website: http://www.barnegat.net/things-to-do/
We are planning to meet at 39 degrees 49.735' North lattitude, 074 degrees 05.698 West longitude, roughly speaking. This area is a bit south of the small deck and walkway that leads to the beach. It'll make more sense when we all arrive. I'm sure you guys all have charts of the area, eh? I'll be arriving around mid-day on Friday, 9/14 only because I can. I know some guys have indicated they may arrive that day and some on Saturday. Whatever floats your boat!!!
As we will be anchoring in relatively shallow water, walking to the walkover is possible although I usually bring my dinghy so I can row. There is not a great tidal range at Tice's. Maybe 1 1/2 feet during normal tides.
There has been discussion about bathrooms at Island Beach State Park so I'm attaching a link to a very helpful site. As noted, bathrooms are located at Area A-6 but the walkover is at area A-7 which is where we'll be staying. I don't remember how far it is to A-6 but I usually try to come prepared to be sefl-sufficient (porta potti on board). I'll try to bring lotsa cold beer but you'll be at my mercy as to what it will be.

Remember, this is a natural state stretch of beach. No amusements, restaurants, marinas, stores, wineries...nothing but water and sand. The worst thing we may see is a bunch of powerboaters and jetskiers although they thin out this time of year. In the summer, it has turned into a true madhouse. Here are a few recent shots of the beach, taken just a few weeks ago:

Please reply back with a yea or nay if you plan to attend this humble gathering of Compaconauts. Looking forward to meeting new faces and reuniting with old friends!

"What are you driving (sailing)? "

A Chevy Avalanche with a Horizon Cat on the tandem axle MagicTilt trailer.

The last time I used the Barnegat Township public ramp was with a 30 foot trimaran on a much longer trailer behind the Avalanche. I ran out of room backing up. With the boat sticking way out into the main channel, I couldn't have done it singlehanded. The 10 foot shorter cat boat would probably work better on it.  I may take a drive down there this week to check it out. I'd come for one day, not the weekend.

I'm still in, we (my friend Evan and I) are planning on driving down early Saturday morning and hopefully staying until Sunday morning if my back cooperates.  I injured my back at work earlier in the spring, and the past 3 or 4 weeks have been awful, but I'm slowly recovering.  This has meant that I haven't been able to do any work on the boat to prepare.  I'm so excited for this trip, I've been looking forward to it since you rescheduled.  Oh, we will be bringing my 16 and I now tow with an '06 Silverado 4x4.  Thanks for the ramp info and advice!

Tim Gardner

Well Bob, the best laid plans of mice an men oft go astray.  The water level in Smith Mountain Lake is too low for me to load it on my trailer.  Heck it's too low to even get her out of her slip. It's on a floating lift that's now no longer in deep enough water to float her off the cradle.

So unless we get a deluge before Thursday, it looks like I'll have to pass on BBB 2.0.

Regretfully, TG

those photos were great, bob...   can't wait to get back to barnegat bay.  i have been away for well over a month..   my greatest fear is to get to the marina and fine that my neighbor has hit Adagio again and that there is a big hole to deal with!    i actually was laying awake for a good part of last night thinking about that..   baring that or any other major disaster,   i am headed down to the marina on friday after school.   i will set the alarm for early saturday morning in order to make it to tice's  as quickly as possible.   looking forward to seeing you and the other folks who have signed up..     my plan is to stay over saturday night  and return to the marina on sunday morning where i will possibly be meeting up with some friends from school for a short sail before de-rigging the boat for the season :(
tim..    come along without your boat!  you would be welcome to sail with me if you would like to meet up on saturday morning!

let's keep our fingers crossed  that the weather cooperates!     jt

Bob,
We have been so looking forward to bringing the Madame to Barnegat Bay and meeting all of you but life events just won't le it happen for us this time.  Between jobs and family issues leaving on Friday is out of the question and I don't even know if we could get away on Saturday yet.  The weather looks like it is going to be perfect and that makes it even more frustrating.  :(   Suzie and I hope all of you have a great time.  Hopefully we can get away for a sail locally at some point.  We will be thinking of you!

Captain Allen and Admiral First Class Suzie:
So sorry to hear you can't make it. If you're ever down in our area, give me a heads up via pm. Maybe we can still get together to sail.

Tim:
Also sorry to hear you can't make it, either. I figured it was a long shot because I know you had a long drive. Maybe next year...stay well.

I was down at S'Go's slip tonight.  Water level dropped 6 more inches today.  Normally this time of year the lake is at full pond, but a warmer than usual summer and little rain conspired to work against me.  so..

NEXT YEAR ---- YAY! er, I mean ARRRRRRR!

Hey everybody -

I'm still planning on attending BBB-2012 2.0, but have a little problem... no crew! So... if anyone has an extra body that would like "rough it" on a CP16, please let me know ASAP. Pegasus does have soft bunks, and all basic necessities. My wife says that gender IS an issue!

Smier

Marty, I find myself in the same predicament.  My crew and partner in crime called tonight and cancelled out on me(something about he hasn't been home to spend time with his admiral lately)...  I'd come join you, but I apparently now have the flu?!?!?  It's not looking good for me right now guys...  I'll keep you posted if situations improve.  I really want to check the bay out, looks like a great spot for family fun!

jthatcher

Marty,
if you want to save yourself the job of towing your boat down to jersey, you would be welcome to join me.   i won't be shoving off till saturday morning - i would be happy to have you along.. just bring a sleeping bag.   jt
