Mernin' mates!
Bet you thought I'd forgotten about this epic gathering of the East Coast squadron of Compac-o-nauts international! Ha, you won't get off that easy!
So with Thanksgiving fast approaching, Christmas around the next corner and the end of the year not far behind, let's plan the next Mid Winter Gathering! I've forgotten what number this is but what matters is that we meet to celebrate our common love for the wind and water.
I'm thinking mid January after the holiday rush is done but before all of our credit card bills arrive! What say ye merry ladies and gents? Are you ready to toss your reputation to the wind and throw your lot in with this questionable group of wharf rats?
Cheers!!
Bob23
HMMM, January is hardly midwinter. I can hear Florida whispering "O Great And Wonderful Admiral Tim, come visit your grandchildren in balmy, sunny Florida" To which Admiral Vicki says" I, OGWAT, am retired, and wish to do so"
Minwinter is the first week of February, CC Bill's notwithstanding.
TG
Me and the Mrs/admiral are in.
Arrgh! Count this pirate as a yea! My reputation lays at the bottom of Barnegat Bay!
Do we have a location?
Not yet but I'm toying with The Shrimp Box in Point Pleasant, it's on the waterfront. But I'm open to suggestions! Let's keep those cards and letters coming kids!
Hey Folks,
I have been out of the loop for a while. This retirement thingy is keeping us busy but I just checked in and saw the post. Suzie and I always enjoy the getaway but we are not available until January 25 and any weekend after that. Any restaurant option would be great with us.
Keep us posted.
-Allen
Thanks gents!!
Taking Allen's available dates, how about we shoot for April Fools Day? Kind of funny....chime in and let's discuss dates and where!
for the cause...'cause I care!!
Bob23
I'm free most weekends expect the ones the admiral has unknown plans which could be many of them. She's on maternity leave and keeps insisting we do things together all weekend! She clearly hasn't read any pirate novels. Bad weekends for me are 1/25, and 2/8. I wouldn't work around me, we're also clearing out the house in preparation for a potential move 6 blocks east to another town with better schools for these freeloaders.
Ryan. So April 1st is good? Bring the Admiral and freeloaders along! They'll eventually learn of the kind if people their dad is hanging around with!
Bob23
Correction men. Bob23 must've been hittin' the rum early. Not April 1st- February 1st!
February 1st is good for us. I hope you can find a place that will allow/tolerate riffraff such as us. Looking forward to seeing everyone.
-Allen
Hmm, Feb.1, Hmm
Feb 1 sounds pretty good.

I tried to "like" this...then I remembered I wasn't on FB!!
Me thinks this is a great idea! Whatch y'all think?
Bob23
Looks good from here but we are a 10 day sail away... so we'll take the Toyota. You New Joysians would know better than us, so we will entrust that decision to you.
BTW..... looking back at the post this should be the 8th Mid Winter Gathering.
After much soul searching and rates etc. Man you guys live in nowheresville, NJ. Not even a Hampton inn nearby. 8 hr drive up, eat, drink, swap sea stories, sleep, hangover, 8 hr drive back.
I think I've gotten too old for such a short road trip.
However, Vicki and I are going to be in Florida from about the 15th of Feb to about March 10th. Flitting here and there. Anybody wanna come along?
Holiday Inn only 10 minutes away. Next excuse!!
Date has been scribed. Will this be a lunch or dinner outing? I will tell Nick, the new owner of Freedom, as he might want to tarnish his reputation and join the ranks.
Bob, "8 hr drive up, eat, drink, swap sea stories, sleep, hangover, 8 hr drive back." you gonna drive down to pick us up?
Hey I drove 6.5 hrs for lunch once! LOL
Thank you Kev! Couldn't have said it better myself.

Hey I drove 6.5 hrs for lunch once! LOL
Twice! CBMWG 1.0 & 2.0. Colonial Beach and Topping. Attached proof you came to the first one. You did a short video of the second.

Easy to forget!
Good times Rick!
UPDATE!
Lesa just reminded me we have a fundraiser thing for the local high school marching band Feb 1 @ 6:30.
So won't be able to make it if it's dinner.....How about a 2:00 lunch.....or earlier.
Then you all can join us for a 'Night at the Races' (https://www.facebook.com/events/477527539481722/) at the local firehouse. LOL
And just like that I'll now be in Raleigh NC on Feb. 1st.
Ok....If we want to shoot for another day we are free all of February and March.
Has anyone heard from Marty?
Marty and I spoke the other day on the phone...he's fine and plans to be at the MWG. I'd be in favor of the following Saturday evening 02/08/2020 at the Hotel LBI. What do you other rum drinkin' winch crankin' wharfrats have to say?
On the 8th we'll be in NYC for Robin's Fashion Show.
Holy cannoli!! How about February 15th???
The 15th is Valentine's day weekend. How about February 22 or 29?
What's Valentine's Day?
Excuses, excuses, excuses. Just do it.
Ok ya bunch of gnarly jib haulin' rum drinkin' anchor pollishin' wharf rats! How about February 22nd which is Saturday night 1800 hours local time at Hotel LBI!!
Was on the island today for work and drove past Hotel LBI. Poor fools have no idea whats in store for them! I'm good for the 22nd.
Next time you're on LBI, give a call. We'd be honored for you to bring us coffee!!
Ok..Ryan's in. Who else will throw in their lot with us??
Okay... 22nd it is!
I guess the surprise visit by myself and Mas is no longer on the table. On the 22nd, I'll be in Sunny Florida for a few weeks.
Hey Ya'll. This boy has been back on the snow (yup that's right!) and out of the loop. Just noticed all of the flurry on dates and Tim divulging our stealth visit. Figured we might not get past NJ border patrol if expected! I'll lift a glass to ya on the 22nd!
Mas
Do you have ESP Bob? I was in fact on the island for a coffee operation! Please put the date for the most people to join the party, I could be knee deep in moving come Feb. 22nd. We're going to see two overpriced houses tomorrow.
22nd is good for us also. Once we lock the date we'll make hotel reservations...
-Allen
I, the self appointed czar of the mid winter gatherings do hereby declare that the 22nd of February in the year of our Lord two thousand and twenty will be the date of the Mid Winter Gathering. All in favor, say eye. All those opposed, say eye!!
eye
eagl..... EYE
Ha, great! We have two now where are the rest of you lazy rum drinkin' bilge cleaners??
AYE! Plus Nick and his son Gerald. Sent him the link to this forum but he's concern about Bob strong arming that $5k membership fee! He's got your cell number and might try and negotiate a deal.
Thanks Ryan...he did call and I'll call him back today. Yeah, I'll cut a deal. At the gathering he'll get the new guy discount- he gets to pay the entire bill!! Don't say anything, he'll find out at the gathering. What a lovely surprise for him!
Bob23
Ok men (and ladies). How about a final headcount? Here's what I have:
The Admiral and I
Kev and Lesa
Allen and Suzie
Ryan and---bring the whole fam!
Brian and Ellen
Marty and whoever he shows up with
Nick who bought Ryan's 25
Who have I missed?
Feb 22 looks good for Ellen and me.
Terrible winter of working on the house, I guess this is what other people do when we are sailing.

I resent that, I've never been known to clean my bilge.
However, it is as usual an RSVP of regrets. Too busy, too far and additionally there is the ever present danger of my unpaid initiation fee. Why the principal along with ten years of interest at Bob's rates put the total at the GDP of a small country. And, since Senior Fleet Admiral Extraordinaire AKA his Timness is displaying his normal sound judgement and traveling south rather than north in the middle of February, there will be no one there to protect me from what could turn out to be a plank walking event.
Maybe some year this event will coincide with a visit to my Philly suburb living son's home, but for this year all of you have a great time.
Brack- You show and I'll waive any and all of your fees including the ones you've neglected to pay! Sure would love to have you attend this unruly bunch of anchor polishing catboat jib tenders!
Update: Nick and his wife will be attending, too. Nick is the new owner of Ryan's 25 and is new to the forum here so let's all try to be on our best behavior and.....oh hell. Who am I kidding!! We'll just be ourselves and have boatloads of fun!
Cheers!

Well as already revealed, a stealth visit had been in the works for when it was a February 1 gathering and that both Tim and I will now be otherwise disposed for the 22nd date. This does mean an actual plan to come had been placed into the works, so ya never know when us south of the border Compacteers may choose to invade the north.
I did wanna weigh in on Bob's "catboat jib tenders" comment.....I love volunteering to manage the jib on catboats! Such an important crew position leaves my hands more available for holding non PBR's! Jus sayin.
Meanwhile, still up on the mountain where it just started snowing again and new terrain was just opened this morning so.....

Watch out Mas, you might recall we had a member, Capt_Nemo who very effectively added a sprit and a jib to his Suncat. With that attitude you could end up working a very small foredeck at some time in the future.
Going to my mountain mid march. Hope I don't break anything except my equipment. Skis easy to replace, 73 YO bones, not so much.

Ya just gotta be willing to watch out for such things! At least with a small foredeck ya won't misplace your drink. Just gotta keep it out of the drink!
Totally hear ya on the broken bone part, been there done that now so checked that box. Not far behind ya in years Brack. Still not 100% a year later but am riding that horse again!
ATTENZIONE::
I am securing a table for 14 at 6pm at Hotel LBI as the place where we'll least likely to get arrested. Looking forward to this monumental event. If I've missed someone, speak now or forever hold your beer! I'll make the rez under my name which is spelled Bob Twenty Three! See you all there. If this time doesn't work for anyone, please pm me or better yet, drop a text or call my cell. I think you all have it.
Let the wild times begin!!
Bob23
Great job, Bob! Suzie and I will be coming in on Friday. We'll check in with thy local bail bonds just to give them a heads up.
Looking forward to seeing everyone!
-Allen
Great Allen. But I've already pre arranged bail for everyone. Funny thing though- they charged double for you!
Here's the link I forgot to include last night!
https://hotellbi.com/
Cheers!
Reservations made! Under my name Bob Errico. Just in case any of you thought my last name was Twenty three! 6pm on 2/22/2020, Saturday. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone!
Please write back if you cannot make it so I can change the rez. But you better be there!!
Bob23
Just to make you MWG folks think warmly of me at your table, The Admiral and I'll be lounging in summer-like weather in Ft. Myers FL, prior to sailing into the Caribbean Sea aboard a cruise ship.
EYHO Y'all!

Here's hoping that the only Corona related issues that happen on your cruise have limes stuck in the top!
....meanwhile Bob don't forget we threatened to come under stealth mode, so you will never be secure in the knowledge that the gathering will be safe. You dodged the bullet this year by changing the date but in the future.......
Tim: Sure wish you could be here and please remember to keep the sunblock on! We'll think of you very warmly as Vicki (had to edit Mr. Twenty-three's post to correct the spelling of the Admiral's land-lubber name - TG) was kind enough to forward your credit card to me. Yes my friend, we'll think of you so very warmly as we sign the bill. I'll get that card back to you in perfect working order. Might need to see if it works at Defender too!
Mas: Feel free to just show up! No corona's here, only PBR!!
Cheers my friends!! I raise my glass of PBR to you all!!
Hi All - new the forum here, Nick's son, Gerard (co-owner of Freedom). My Dad told me about the gathering next weekend he and my mom will be attending, hope you guys have fun and look forward to meeting you at The Bash or another event this summer - cheers!
Never seen a Cat boat rigged with a jib. Looking forward to the MWG to learn more about this rigging.
Hello Nick and Gerard!! And welcome to the forum! I'm sure you'll fit right in and I'm looking forward to meeting you Nick and your wife. This years Mid Winter Gathering will prove to be one of the best...but I say that every year!
Nick...there are lots of things to learn here...many of which you'll wonder how you did without. Others, you might just shake your head, roll your eyes and wonder about our sanity.
See you all this coming Saturday at 1800 hrs local time at Hotel LBI!
Bob23..for the cause.
Actually, Nick, you'll wonder about Bob23's sanity the most.
His Timness
Nick, I'm afraid I have to admit Tim is right. Hey, someone's got to wonder about my sanity- I can't be bothered!!
Ladies and gents:
The 2020 Mid Winter Gathering is upon us and I for one am looking forward to this epic event! Let's try to be on our best behavior shall we...oh...haha, I forgot who I was writing to! We'll have a great time...so fun to keep the sailing spark alive!
See you there!
Bob23
Bob, or do you spell it boB? Joan and I were planning on surprising you with our presence, but the Coronavirus is preventing us from traveling east. Too bad to, I still have some pbr (intentional lower case) from the last time you came to CLR. I tried donating it to a pantry, but they said they can't accept uningestibable items. I have been using it to clean the bottom of Miss Adventure and the results are amazing! Have fun!
Carl, that's so thoughtful and you'd be welcome anytime...well, Joanie would be! As you are aware, there is no PBR virus or Guinness virus- I don't drink corona and now you know why. Don't waste that old PBR! Like fine wine, it just gets better with age so be adventurous and give it a sip! I guarantee you'll not be disappointed!
Bob twenty three
Gents seems I'll have to bail on tonight's festivities. Last night I finally succumbed to whatever disease(s) my three year old caught at daycare. Definitely not Coronavirus but we're still waiting on lab results for PBRvirus. Raise a glass for me of the good stuff for me!
Folks,
What time do we cast off tonight?
Just wanna make sure to be Moored at the bar early.
Get better Ryan.
Thanks,
Brian
Bob23- a pox upon your nefarious MWG !!! I went to four different 7-11s to buy some PBR, and they were all out. Said all PBR production was being shipped to the LBI Hotel for some sort of riff-raff ragbag gathering. Had to buy Natty Lite and Schlitz, instead. Have fun!! Post pictures!! Eat, drink, and lie !!!

...well we got a different answer when we inquired as to what happened to all of the PBR... i didn't fully understand the explanation but something about EPA, CDC, and since PBR is owned by a Russian company (actually it is) potential interference with the 2020 elections. I dunno, anyway as promised will lift a glass at the appointed time to our Northern friends!
We'll converge at the place just before 1800 hrs local time. Or in landlubber time 6pm! Reservations are in my name and it looks like we'll be seated in a section away from the normal dining patrons. Hmmm...can't imagine why!
See you there!
We plan to be a bit early for happy hour drinks!
.....just found out it is National Margarita Day!
This can only mean trouble!

No sailboats were harmed in the making of this epic event! Great time, thank you everyone who made this another perfect evening! Fun time with old friends and new as well! Now for the Bash planning!
Cheers, Bob 23
What a Motley Crew! By the way, Bob, did you guys get the round of drinks I ordered and prepaid for you guys from the shifty proprietor of that establishment?
TG
Rubber Ducky - AKA 'Freedom's new mascot' has not been named just yet, but she will be on-board soon! Heard the dinner was a lot of fun!
