There Goes Irene!!

Thank God that Irene did not live up to the media hype. The mighty Beagle was prepped for much higher winds than predicted and came through with flying colors. A few trees in the neighborhood were blown down and there is currently some flooding going on in the lower lying areas, and the tide is on the way up now, which will add to the three-four foot surge we had at the height of the blow. Here are a few pics............

Glad the Beagle, you and Becky are safe, not necesarily in that order. Nice rafting job by your nautical neighbors. They should teach anchoring courses, eh?

That three part harmony raft-up was my biggest worry, Bob. If that broke loose with any southerly component in the wind, I would have had a major problem!!  Also, that porto-john that broke loose from its mooring, fortunately, headed in the opposite direction of the Beagle. Hope you made out well in your slip!

   I wonder what possess's people to anchor/moor boats like that. Staggers the imagination, doesn't it. Keep photos of those boats on file- 3 to stay away from while on the bay!
   I was at Long Key at 10pm, 3pm and 7am. She's still there, stubborn old girl that she is. It's gonna take more than a hurricane to end her life. Thanks be to God!

I didn't notice any mooring lines on that Porta-John. Doesn't look very seaworthy to me. Is that the exhaust for the diesel at the stern?

That canal is in Forked River, NJ- seven in from the Barnegat Bay proper and west of the Barnegat Inlet. Small community built in the sixties called Forked River Beach. Great place to live.

Hi Peter,  thanks for posting the pics..   it is good to hear that you and bob seemed to ride out the storm in good shape.  Tomorrow, i am hoping to hear how things turned out at Shore point marina in bayville where we have our compac 23.   i have my fingers crossed!   i had a colleague in NH who had a compac 27 - we sailed it on lake winnipesaukee, and that is how i was introduced to compacs in the first place..  when i saw this 23 for sail early in the spring, i did not have to think about if for very long!   the season is over for us, but maybe we will see you out on the bay next year.     take care,  jt

Glad Irene left without causing you guys a lot of grief. I just noticed that jt's CP23 is in Bayville. Was just there on Saturday. Check out my post "Sailing Barnegat in a CP16!". Sorry you weren't there, would have been nice to meet you guys. I'm going to try to extend my season through October... brrr. And maybe a shot at Nockamixon. I checked Nockamixon out last week and really liked what I saw. I might try Barnegat one more time this year. Saturday was a hoot!

Was out in Narragansett bay Saturday night. Just outside of Wickford harbor two big sailboats were ashore on the rocks from Irene.

   If you can give some heads up via personal message, perhaps we can get together for a sail. You are in my home waters! I sail through the middle of October or even later if the weather is warm. At the end of September, I move up to a marina in Waretown (next town North of Barnegat) and sail in the southern to mid Barnegat Bay. Hope to catch you out there next time you are down.
   Saturday was good...I was out in a friends Precision 15. Not a Compac 23 but it'll do in a pinch.

Sad to learn about the two boats that Irene shoved into the rocks. Sure hope nobody was aboard. Have a photo of the sailing cruiser that I mentioned in my post about sailing the bay. Soon as I can figure out how to get it into a post, I'll post it. Not very pretty. Again sure hope nobody got tangled or hit when it all came crashing down.

so.... last week i was worried about how Adagio would fair, tied up in her slip in NJ, during the height of Irene..  and the joke here at school was  " first an earthquake, now a hurricane, what else could happen.."  well, the answer to that question is "perhaps a flood!"   Just about every school in our county has already called off tomorrow as the Susquehanna River swells with a projection of 38.5 feet by 2 am friday morning..   some of the nearby towns have already mandated an evacuation, and i would not be surprised to hear tomorrow morning that we too will need to head to higher ground..  that is a major hassle in itself, but  we live at a boarding school, and that means moving the entire boarding community to a new location.    I have been through this once before in the summer of 2006, during summer school..  oh well,   at least we don't have to worry about the boat this time around!  ( i hope!)   jt

well,  three buses loaded with kids just hit the road..   the newest projections are that the river will be  40.8 feet by tonight.. that is just inches shy of the top of the dike system, so we are out of here..  looking forward to reading some sailing stories after we have settled in at a local camp...   the last few hours have been kind of exciting, but this will get old, really fast!   jt
