Hi Everyone,

Just saw this 16 pop up on Craigslist in Springfield, VA. Here is the Craigslist ad. It needs some work but if the hull and trailer are ingood shape it might be a good deal. https://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/boa/d/compac-16-sailboat-and-trailer/6397220141.html

Talk about priced to sell, what a price.  If I didn't already have one, I'd be really tempted--looks like a great deal.

I'm always so surprised people don't add more pictures, it helps things sell easily, but at the low baller price, maybe he is hiding something and showing the "good side"

Seems like a great price for a fixer upper that has all the pieces. Thats what I paid for my boat with a working engine, although I did  have to get some new blocks and all new lines. My 16's P.O. never actually sailed it or put the mast on it, he used it to go fishing in the freshwater canals, luckily all the sails and standing rigging were still in his back yard laying in the dirt. For a motivated person who has spare time and know-how, this could make for a cheap, fun boat or a good flip sale . The prices for nice, in-tact Compacs is going up and up...

Bob, ad says clean title for boat, just missing one for trailer. DMV in Va. is pretty good about getting a replacement title. Worst case scenario the current owner will need to get it then sign it over to you. Declare the trailer worth $100 and it's a no brainer.

MUST HAVE CASH!!  MUST HAVE CASH !!.........oh that's right you now are one boat down and one chunk of change up! I don't really think you want one....or you would just go get it and be done with this!!!!!  :)

In NJ, not having a trailer title or registration is a nightmare! Just went through it...tool only 7 trips to DMV to finally get it titled and registered in my name. The trailer issue is a deal breaker for me...otherwise I'd be driving south right now.

Hmmm...all it takes is a phone call to the owner saying get the title and I'll be down. They are well advised to do it to sell her anyway, though truth be told i never, nor did the previous owner of No Mas ever title the trailer. She was sold with the Colorado plates that were over 10 years old, the same plates that i drove her from Mobile Alabama with. The new owner that bought her from me had no problem getting a new title with the bill of sale that contained the VIN number. He drove from New Hampshire with the new plates in hand and it already registered in his name. Nothing stands between you and that lil 16 other than will power!!!!

I've emailed the owner and waiting for a reply. I have no idea about how things work in other states but in NJ (land of lazy public servants and endless red tape) not having an original registration is a nightmare. We'll see what he has to say. I could be a 16 owner by the weekend. If I buy it, I'm gonna strip it down to race mode so look out!!

Mas

Ah....race mode! We had had ours up to almost 70mph for a bit before backing off to cruising speed about 55! She can hold her own on the road.  :)

Now.....as far as sailing....with Pedro now in possession of a sailboat again and the possibility of a 16 in your stable, CBMSG 3.0 could possibly involve a regatta! Meanwhile be sure to bring pics to CBMWG 3.0 to share. Our lil 16 is now sitting contently back up by our mountains waiting for spring. Heading to Interlude to finish her winterizing and then it is time to go find snow! The Whitegrass, Jack Frost Party (probably one of the best parties ever conceived), is this coming weekend and we will be there! Always a 50/50 shot at actually getting some x-country skiing in, though we go for the gathering regardless.

oops, need more coffee, thread drift alert! Good luck on the boat, those 16's seem to be creeping up in price.

There...back on topic.

Yeah, I'd be more worried about the trailer bearings or tires, than the title.  7 trips to the DMV, however painful, are probably easier and quicker than cleaning, painting, and polishing the hull (you did say racing mode, right?).

Definitely agree could be a great investment, if only I had more time.

Bob, we bought a new trailer for a 17 ft. Scout last fall for $650 at Franklin Trailers in Berlin. Think it's a 1500lb capacity. I'm sure the bunk modifications couldn't be more than $200. No title worries, and the resale value after your "race mode" modification will surely cover the added cost.

Not all NJ public servants are lazy, just the one sailing a CP19 out of Great Bay:0!

R - M ,  If you're trailer sailing a 19 you're not lazy.  Your perfectly timed comment to bob23 sure dampened his stockings.  If the trailer was ever titled in VA, he can get a copy easily.
All I hear from bob23 is excuses for not getting a 16. (Probably doesn't have the required acquisition chit from the Admiral and is afraid to tell us, Hmmmm bob???)

Too far for me which is probably a good thing.  I've been kinda looking for one to make into a mini trawler.

When I bought my 23 and went to the tag office to register the trailer, all they wanted to know is how many axles.  In Mississippi, the land of the good old boys, titles on trailers are optional.  When I had the MDWFP agent come out to inspect my Bateau Skiff I asked if he wanted to see my plans.  No, they really only do a physical inspection when they assign numbers to lost titles and home builts to look for stolen boats.  But he said it was a beautiful boat and he would not put the VIN number on the stern as is normal, but I could do it in his presence so I could get it on perfectly straight.

Maybe in progressive New Joisy, stolen trailers are a big problem.:)

Ok all, we should not give Bob too much grief, though some may be in order. I know he has the change, one boat down so easier to fill that spot, good deal (it appears), title can bet dealt with, thinking there is just not enough want!!!!

Can always wait for another, but in the 6 months we looked for one i found out the prices are slowly increasing and those well cared for carry a premium that will still be less expensive than a major project. That is true of ALL boats (unless one places no value on their time!)

Shall we start a betting pool on this one? A six of PBR to Bob if he gets it, a six of beer of my choice if he does not. What say you
Bob?  Hmmm....can taste that beer already!   :)

one thing i know for sure----two "ifs". if bob gets the boat and if bob makes it to CLR 2018. i have never seen a "race" series com-pac 16. Ill take that back. with Matt at the helm every 16 is a "race" series boat. next july might just be interesting
