I'm actually looking at an AMF Sunbird. Anyone know anything about these? Same price as the 16, has all titles, nice trailer, no motor (heck, I can row this) and close to home.
I wouldn't stand a chance against Matt if I were in a 16! I've seen him sail...the 16 master!!

Tim Gardner

The Sunbird is a centerboard boat (old guys have a hard time righting them) and the cabin is definitely not for overnights.  A 16 has a nice keel that rights the boat and can be overnight-ed.  If they are the same money, the 16 is a far better boat.

Thanks, TG. I know the two boats are not comparable but this has clear titles, is within 5 miles of my house and is beachable. I'd love to have something that I can trailer sail and explore with. Plus this summer whilst out on Koinoina, I caught up with one and it was no slouch! We'll see how this goes. Gotta have something to tow out to CLR!!

ah but that conjures up memories of "Texas Doug". a sailor of great skill and courage (he says). Doug is not a mythical figure but a real (real gone) living person. tales have been written about the brave men who have helmed sailboats but none compares to Texas Doug. Clr sailors were regaled with hes feats of helmsmanship. i don't think that anyone present at the clr shared Doug's passion for boxed wine at Carlyle lake temperature. Very few of us have seen a AMF sunbird much less one that was manned by such an unforgettable character.

Bob,
I had a Siren 17 and to me she wasn't heavy enough to handle the bay chop and puffy winds. That said, I didn't (and still don't) know what I'm really doing so keep that in mind. The one thing I did love was being low to the water.

Being a former Seapearl 21 owner, light weight does not concern me. I'm just looking for another boat that I can trailer around. A 16 would be nice but this little Sunbird just caught my eye!
Kick: I vaguely remember the name Texas Doug. Thanks for the flashback!!

anyone who has ever met the notorious "Texas Doug"  wouldn't say they vaguely remember him. I think there was an old story about him in the old reader's digest. and i think he was pictured in a documentary about woodstock.

So.....i almost always run the 16 up to the beach. No centerboard to jam. It sails just like a 23 cept smaller. Same hull with all of it's beautiful compound curves. After sailing with a friend decades ago on his center board boat and had his board jam in the down position so we could not recover it, i swore i would never own a boat with a moving part that can jam like that.

We are done for the season. Jack Frost here we come!!!!!

Like Reighnman, my Siern 17, was a easytow.  Most boat weight was in the centerboard keel, and very un compact 19 like, she heeled over on a fart of air.  But as hard as I tried, and once lost mast in high winds, she never went over.

I still have her North Sails. Bob if you get the Sunbird, these probably can work, and there's a lot of life left in them.  if you promise not to give me a PBR, they can be yours...

Brian: This is an incentive, thanks!  Not sure which way I'm going on this as there are many 16's out there. But this little Sunbird look appealing to me plus it's in my budget.

Ok my thoughts on this quandary Bob is experiencing between the AMF and the CP16

If you want an easy to trailer and rig boat either will suffice
As far as beaching something you are looking a 12 vs 18 inch draft, with no moving parts on the CP16.
Ability to overnight is clearly better on the CP16 but could shoehorn your way into the AMF
Ability to stand up to wind and waves would give a clear nod to the CP16 (Like the 23 she won't pound either)
the total displacement on the AMF is the amount in the keel of the CP16
Ability to get parts and have a responsive company it appears the CP16 is the choice (have never dealt with AMF but hasn't been built since 1981)
Ability to sell it if wished and recover funds spent-can only speak to the CP16's which are now selling used, if well maintained, what they were new.
Beauty is clearly in the eyes of the beholder, but my eyes don't see the same classic lines on the AMF as the CP16 has.
Convenience gives the nod to he AMF as close by, but then again 7-11's are convenient but i don't do my shopping there.

Hope this helps. I have my six of beer already picked out and know where i can get PBR on sale in case you do get the CP16.  :)

Update: the Craigslist ad has expired.

Ahh...the wisdom of Mas is undisputable! Good points all, very good points and I'll take 'em all into consideration.

Bob23

Final decision has been reached. No CP 16, no Sunbird. Rather I'll concentrate on my 23 and the infamous Adirondack Guideboat "Straggler".

what happened did you get rid of the p 15?
