Curious if anyone has ever crossed an ocean sailing a Com-Pac? I got to thinking about Sam Holmes crossing the Pacific (San Diego to Hawai'i) in his Ranger 23 (https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/ranger-23) a few years ago and wondered about (only daydreaming!) doing this passage with my CP23D (https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/com-pac-23-mk-3). Of course, it's a total pipe dream of mine, but again, I have fun daydreaming about it! ;D In all seriousness tho, I would love to learn if anyone has ever sailed a Com-Pac across an ocean or across other large bodies of water. My 'realistic dream' is to sail my 23D up in Lake Superior, around the Apostle Islands. It would be a dream come true to make that happen!

I don't know about crossing an ocean, but some years ago I read an account of a couple sailing and living aboard their 23 in the Carribean.  They had sailed from the Rodriguez Key to Alice Town.

As for the Apostle Islands, that is still on my bucket list.  Perhaps we could get a group of Compact O nuts together for a trip?

Carl, that is a fabulous idea!!! Let's make it happen!!! I think when I was there before -- 40 years ago! -- my family generally chartered out of Bayfield, WI, if memory serves me correctly. I would assume that there is some sort of area where we could all launch around there -- or maybe another area that might be better? Ohhh, I am so excited thinking about this trip!!! I am game to help organize and if anyone else has interest, let's connect and try to get things rolling -- is next year too soon? ;D

Its never too soon - only too late!

Chelle,

I think next summer would be doable for me.

I have done the Apostle Islands in my P-21 years ago.  Some great sailing with base operations in Bayfield, WI.  Count me in for doing it again in my Eclipse.  Sail On - Al

That is wonderful, Al! I was doing some reading on the forum, last night, on the CP 33/35 section and noticed one of our forum members, who has a CP 35, was out of Port Superior Marina in Bayfield, WI. Looks like the marina is situated due west of the southern portion of Madeline Island -- might be a place we could call home base for the trip? http://portsuperior.com

Friends,

Should we start a separate thread for organizing this trip?

Does anyone have a suggestion for when we should time the trip for optimal weather (aside from just 'summer')?

Is there any month, during the summer, that's best for folks? I will need to give about 6 months notice for time off at work.

Are we thinking a long weekend trip? A week?

Carl, are you bringing your 19, I am assuming?

Chelle,
My schedule is flexible at this point. As you noted in an earlier message it would be great to find someone local that knows the best time of summer etc to do this and help with a cruising agenda etc.  I know that I would stay probably a minimum of a week since it is a fairly far from Ohio and this would probably be a once in a lifetime event for me.  As you noted it might be a good idea to start a thread regarding this trip.
Thanks,
Chris

I'll be following this to see if it gets traction.  Some interest certainly, have never been in that area.  No chance I'd tow to the area, way too far and too much work for an old guy to retrieve, prep for tow, launch, retrieve, prep for tow, and launch again back home.  Would consider a bareboat charter in the area, likely would not be a Compac unless one is available.  Thoughts on that?  May send my sailing resume to charter companies for pre qualification just in case.  Sitting here in the non coastal mid south just having gone through about six weeks of heat index readings in the 100 to 115 range and the temps in that area look very attractive.

I'd be in for an Apostle Island trip.  The Admiral and I spent a week sailing there fall 2019.  Its very doable in any size boat you can sleep in.  Many anchorages, and one is always within a couple hour sail.  And the marina on Madalyn is always a place to overnight if you need provisions or to charge up mid trip.

You want to go late summer to early fall when the weather is still nice but the water isn't freezing cold.

We put in at the resort in Red Cliff.  It's a little more centralized to the islands than Bayfield, but either is a good option.

Chelle,  yes, I'd be towing our 19 up there with a stop in northern IL to visit family.  The foundation is being installed for our new house here, so I'm certain it will be complete by next August.

Boy, if this actually gets off the ground, I for one would love to try and be involved!

Seachelle

It is awesome seeing all of this activity and interest on this thread re: an Apostle Islands adventure! I have started a new thread, 'APOSTLE ISLANDS ADVENTURE 2023' over on the 'Group Outings and Com-Pac Events' heading -- I think that is the right place for it, yes?

Let's continue the conversation here at this link: https://cpyoa.com/forum/index.php?topic=12422.0
