Koinonia,

You mention a future trip to the Bahamas and the need to add extra "tankage" for diesel fuel. How much diesel can you carry now for the trip to Dry Tortugas/Key West? And, how much do you think you'll need for the Bahamas?

Years ago I took two different boats to the Bahamas, cruising for months at a time and, although I did carry a few extra Jerry jugs of fuel up on deck and some extra water in gallon jugs below the cabin sole, I didn't have any problem "topping off" with diesel fuel or water.

sorry about not posting lately on this subject.  When I said "our site" I was refering to a post from another 27 owner on this site, though after reading my own post I can see how it could have easly been missunderstood.  We didnt make it to the tortugas or key west as the weather was really funky our first week in fl.  We made an attempt at the crossing but in 10 hours only covered 35 miles due to wind comeing directly from the south and giving a 2ft chop that was just beating the boats speed down.  With the M12 diesel on the boat I think I motored about 40 hours on 15 gallons so consumption was about 2.6 hours per gallon at around 2400-2500 rpm.   Im really looking into repowering to keep speed up when the conditions arent at their best so this will most likely change our next time out.  I had one extra 5 gallon jug under the helm seat and one 5 gallon jug behind the back rest on the port side of the boat.  For extra water I had two extra 5 gallon jugs behind the backrest on the starboard side.  Walmart sells a taller skinnier blue jug that fits perfectly in that spot so you dont have jugs taking up space on deck.  With only one water tank I always like to have backup since usually water tanks dont have guages and you just know your out when your water pump doesnt shut off when you turn a faucet off.  Alot of the EXTRA is really there for peace of mind, you can bean count all you want but mother nature can and will throw other variables out to change things.
