Title: FAMWG (5th ANNUAL MID WINTER GATHERING)
Post by: Bob23 on November 11, 2016, 05:16:25 AM
Well boys and girls, it's time to start thinking about the when and where of the famous Mid Winter Gathering of the East Coast Compac-o-nauts. Of course, I'd like to entice all of you to think about driving down here (NJ) where the creation of the universe began. In the past we've held this at such prestigious locations such as Lambertville, Princeton both in NJ and a few places suggested by Marty in Pennslyvania. There's plenty of time to give it some thought...I just wanted to get the ball rolling early.
I'm resisting the urge to give this epic event one of those lengthy names with all the letters and abbreviations...you know, like CLR, CBMWG, SML-CPR, HOTCR...you get the idea. So I won't. It's just the good old 5th annual reason to get together in winter, gab some, eat some, drink some and enjoy the company of some of the greatest people in the world!

wow Bob,  you really are thinking ahead on this one!   given no sudden change in employment plans ( one never knows)   janet and i will do our best to make it to the event..   we just spent some time putting new tarps over Adagio - it is a shame that she has not been in the water for a few years, but  the dreams never cease..  and in the meantime,  it is always nice to meet with you and the other compac sailor folk!    jt

Well since we got CBMWG lined up for 2/11/17 i would suggest a January date maybe not long after the holidays. Possibly MLK weekend? Many folks will have that Monday off, regardless Susan and I will mark our calendars!

Has anyone thought about Annapolis as the location for an East Coast gathering? Plenty of great places to eat, plenty of sailboats to admire on "ego row", plenty for sale.......well maybe not such a good place, could be a costly dinner for some! Last time we went to Annapolis just for fun we ended up with another boat, jus sayin.  :)

Hey Bob,   sorry to be the first to cancel on the mid winter gathering.. even before  the location and date were finalized!   Janet and I thought that we would be spending the winter here in PA, but just last week I saw an advertisement  for a workamper job  in CO..  sent a letter and two days later we were hired.. so  off we go to Colorado for the winter..  we will be back just in time to hang around here for a week or so before we head back up to Maine for our third season at Mount Desert Campground..   are you coming to visit next summer :)     we will miss the chance to get together with everyone, but will look forward to hearing all about it..    take care!   jt

Well you considering you are one of the "originals", you will certainly be missed. Just email me your credit card info and all will be forgiven. Enjoy Colorado...of course, I'm planning to visit Maine soon, just gotta get the damn monkey "work" off my back.
Best to you both!!

Well Tim that may be true....unless we attend this year! We are currently in training for Holiday beer consumption and will be at professional level capabilities by January. (Actually we tend to take January as a time to not have any beers but for such a gathering we will make an exception!)

Glad to hear you are getting out. Smith Mountain Lake is a wonderful place and I am sure you guys are relishing the now nonexistent tourists! You do have your calendar marked for the 2/11/17 CBMWG i assume.  :)

If I could be so bold... the Admiral thinks April would be better. Wouldn't have to wear so many layers! She thinks it should be a "kick-off" for the new sailing season. I reminded her it's to remember the previous one (on the other hand, some of us, namely yours truly, probably would rather forget it!). In any event, any time, any place, we'll be there (or at least try). How about Pat's Pizza and Bistro in Levittown, PA? About a 5 minute walk for me! JUST KIDDING! Maybe Bob could try to get the Moshulu again. This from their web posting: "New American meals & Sunday brunch buffet on a renovated 4-masted ship with an outdoor bar." We could pass on the "outdoor" bar.

Pass on the bar??? May it never be!!!  I was also thinking Moshulu. But I'd rather not wait till spring for a mid winter gathering. Since MAS is planning the CBMWG for 2/11/17, we could look at earlier in February or early March. What see ye, merry gents and ladies? Since we are having this discussion, let's get an idea of who will be wanting to attend this epic event and what dates would work?

Bob, you do me a wrong: I wrote "We could pass on the "outdoor" bar." with emphasis on the outdoor. Dark & Stormy's ought to be the official drink of BBB's.

Checking her schedule, March 11th (or 12th) looks good for the Admiral. I'm available 24/7/365! Looking forward to hearing the tales of those who successfully completed the arduous voyage across the troubled waters of the Barnegat Bay.

The Winter Solstice has just passed... can't wait for the Spring Solstice. Look! the sun actually has come out today!!

A very Merry Christmas to all you BBB'ers and MWG'ers! I'd like to propose March 11th, 2017 as the date for the 5th annual Mid Winter Gathering! What say ye? I figured, the way time flies, it'll be here before we know it! I'm still leaning toward Moshulu only because it's on the water but I'm open to suggestions. I was originally toying with a place really near my house but that would seem selfish on my part and you all know how self sacrificing I am!!
Blessed Christmas to all!!

Hey Bob, Susan and I are a tentative yes. We do have a yearly affair that has not been set in stone yet (not our ability to chisel!) but has always occurred within the first two or three weekends in March. As soon as we know that date we will move to definitely coming or regrets. The venue sounds fine but since you asked for other ideas can only suggest Annapolis, the self proclaimed sailboat capital of the world! Meanwhile we do look forward to your presence at CBMWG 2.0 the month before. Remind Linda that there will be other Admirals present! I know Pedro and Becky will be sad if she does not come! I am working on that beer truck!

How's that Flicka?!  :)

Admiral Linda usually attends the Mid Winter Gatherings up here in NJ. Actually, she hasn't missed one so I'd expect her to be at this one if for no other reason but to make sure I stay under control. I'll work on getting her to the CBMWG.
No news on the Flicka yet...it's not officially for sale but it should be. I might try using Jedi mind control on he owner...

So listen up, mates:
Today the Admiral spent the day in beautiful Cape May, NJ. (Yes, NJ has beautiful places). And the discussion came around to the epic and upcoming FAMWG and the idea of holding it at Lucky Bones in Cape May. There are some very nice places to stay for those travelling and it's not tooooo far for anyone else.
I've eaten there a number of times and found the food fine and there are a number of good beers on tap, one being Allagash White. So, think about it...fortunately we have plenty of time to decide.

Aaarrgh... Here I was all set for Pat's Pizza and Bistro. At least a 10 minute walk for me! Let's see, 110 miles at 3 mph would be a mere 37 hours (not counting any rescues!). That would be without factoring in tides. So, I guess I had better plan on leaving the previous weekend! Good thing I'm retired. Oh, I've been informed by the Admiral that I'd be sailing solo!

If you sailed down the Delaware, just before you get to the end of NJ, hang a quick left into the Cape May Canal and Lucky Bones is on the right, just before a bridge of some sort. Ya can't miss it. Easy peasy!

If I tow my boat, it'll take 9.5 hrs.  If not, 8.5 hrs.
Don't count on me to make it there.
Someplace near Baltimore  or Philly close to an Amtrak station would likely get me there for a late lunch.

This is just the kind of feedback I want. The ultimate goal if for as many of us to attend as possible. If Moshulu is better for most, we'll have it there. Tim, in NJ a late lunch is the same as an early dinner, capeche?

Although it doesn't appear that Moshulu does lunch.

From thier website:
Monday - Thursday: 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm

Friday & Saturday: 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm

Sunday: 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm

Sunday Brunch

Sunday 10:00 am to 2:30 pm

Bob23 - Yeah, I had factored in the Cape May Canal. But I think even with that short-cut, it's scaring off some. Moshulu is definitely a good option,... or Pat's!

Marty

P.S. Maybe you could send some Joisey heavies over to Philly to explain why their health would be maintained if they offered lunch. ;)

If what Eagle eye says is true (and we have no reason to doubt someone who maintains his anchors better than most of us keep our entire boats), we could plan on a March 12th (Sunday) brunch. We have plenty of time for all to weigh in. Or a Saturday early dinner (5pm) What say ye, gnarly wharfrats?

Hmmm....The idea of an Amtrak station nearby for a travel by rail is great idea Tim. Let's try to coordinate timing and we can sit in the club car for some cold ones so we are not out of gas when the light turns green! It will be a several hour trip for us and if not all of it on that wonderful I95 corridor it would not be a big deal. We know we will not be bringing a boat. Probably won't see any boats in he water till almost April. We will be milking the snow season till then!

Keep working on Linda for CBMWG Bob. We promise we will talk about other things than boats, you know stuff like marinas, anchorages....:)

I seriously doubt I can convince the Admiral to attend. Being of Austrian descent, she's pretty stubborn, on a good day! But we'll see.

In other much sadder news, I received an email from Lilly Cutter that Brad (Elk River) passed away on Christmas Eve. I don't have any other information but BBB er's will remember Brad and Lily aboard their Compac 19 "Blue Heaven". When Brad and I first met at the BBB 2014 (I think) we instantly became friends and engaged in the friendly banter commonly found here and at all of the Bash's. He challenged me to a race to Tice's shoals and after we blew by him, I found it necessary to turn around, pass him going the opposite direction and, coming about again, proceeded to pass by him a second time. Of course, as with all Bash get-togethers, it was all in fun.
It was a pleasure watching he and Lily work as a team on board the boat and it was so obvious that the many years together had honed them into "one". I for one will miss this quiet and wise man who travelled a pretty far distance just to mingle with us here in New Joisey, as he was fond of pronouncing it, at both Bash'es and Mid Winter Gatherings.
If you'd like to drop a note to Lily, please message me and I'll give her address. She sounded ok in the email and I believe this was not unexpected as he was dealing with some kind of cancer.
"Sunset and evening star, and one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar, when I put out to sea.
But such a tide as moving seems asleep, too full for sound and foam.
When that which drew from out the boundless deep turns home again.
Twilight and evening bell, and after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell, when I embark.
For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place the flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face, when I have crossed the bar."\

   Alfred Lord Tennyson

Farewell, my friend and although our hours together were few, I felt you and I were a long lost brothers, reunited. I will miss you, Brad.

Bob, send the info to me.  Brad and Lilly opened their home to me two years ago at a mwg.  Great friends , wonderful hosts.  You know, I meet new people everyday, but I had an immediate connection to Brad & Lilly.
This group creates and enhances friendships, I cherish every one I meet here.
Bon Voyage  Brad.

Dear Lily,

It is with heartfelt sadness that we've learned of Brad's passing tonight. Barb and I are very happy to have dined with you both at the King George II in Bristol last March.

I had really enjoyed first meeting you both at the Barnegat Bay Bash and was impressed at the "classy" lifestyle you guys maintained on Blue Heaven. 19 feet of joy. You gave me a fit of three-foot-itis and dreamed of maybe upgrading to a CP19 ("quiet, Pegasus... you're still my baby"). Brad's knowledge of the Chesapeake and generosity led me to participate in the HOTCR in early May
2015. It was a most pleasant and memorable weekend. Thank you!

Brad's wit and friendliness will be missed but, I assure you, not forgotten. I sure hope you'll be able to attend the FAMWG this year... please bring a friend.

Ok ladies and gents. Now that February is here, we need to pick up this ball again and run with it! Where were we anyway? Moshulu? Sounds fine although a bit expensive and their schedule doesn't exactly jive with ours. I'm open to suggestions to almost anywhere.
Can we get a final headcount on this? So far it seems like:
Me and the Admiral
Marty and Barbara
Allen and Suzie
Kev and Lesa
Tim and I really hope Vicki
So, weigh in mates and let's keep this ball rolling along!

Good idea Bob! We are still a tentative yes secondary to an obligation that always falls within the first couple weekends in March. We are not in charge of when and that date is still in flux. Regardless of that we would love to have an excuse to meet more folks form this group. I echo Tim's comment that everyone we have met has been such an add to our lives and we hope us to theirs as well.

As far as where, I am not sure what the geographic range is for this but i would still vote for Annapolis as it is such a fun town and i don't know, something about sailboats there! It is a several hour trip for us but always worth it. Don't know the distance for everyone else. Tons of great places to eat, Naval Academy to visit, beautiful town, oh and then there are those sailboats again.  :)

So to summarize: March 11th is the date set in stone. Because the plan has always been to attract as many suckers..er, I mean attendees to the Mid Winter gathering, it seems that the Philly area is winning out. Okay if we are going with the 'Philly Area' idea I seriously submit the Manayunk Brewery (https://www.manayunkbrewery.com/). We have been there numerous times, great food and Craft Beers! (https://www.manayunkbrewery.com/tap) Manayunk is a great little town if it's nice you can walk around. The Brewery sits right along the old Manayunk Canal which has a Towpath you can stroll on.

Barb and I are okay with 3/11. I like Kevin's choice of the Manayunk Brewery. Sounds like an interesting destination. Nothing like a good bunch of salts (that'd be us!), conversation, food and drink. Admittedly, I still would like to go to the Moshulu, but we are democratic, aren't we? One caveat: Hate to bring it up, but if it's snowing, Manayunk is not the best place to be.

Which way is everyone leaning? Maggies? Kev, have you been to these? Sounds like either may be nicer than Cape May as Lucky Bones is pretty casual...like all of us! Regardless of where, lets nail it down by the middle of next week, ayuh? to give Allen time to make his reservation.

Mates:
The epic 5th annual Mid Winter gathering of the East Coast Compac-o-nauts is upon us! 2 weeks from today. I am hereby casting my vote for Maggies. We have lots of choices but not much time. Lets get some conversation going here. It seems to be a central location for those PA sailors, not too far for us and as far as Allen and Suzie, well they like driving anyway. Seriously, they are driving a considerable distance and I think they plan to stay over so we should make a decision soon, like now for their sake. After all, Allen has graciously offered to underwrite this entire event! What a guy!!!
Can we get a final headcount:
Me and the Admiral
Kev and Lesa
Marty and Barbara
Pedro and Becky-are you guys coming?
Allen and Suzie
Heave and Jackie?
Rick and Susan?
Reighman and mate?

Maggie's it is then! There is a park area with a walk along the water. Here is a drone video that gives a great aerial view of the area. Looks like they have second floor seating which would offer a great view of the rivah!

OK... Maggie's it is.   All sounds great except for that underwriter clause.  The way Bob consumes PBR I would have to auction off my anchor!  Let me go start polishing....

Bob, I would be washing dishes for several weeks as the boss sends me out with mostly empty pockets when it comes to anything sailing. Last time I took her on a Sunday drive we "happened" to end up at a Yamaha dealer and purchased a 4hp leftover! Might have to resort to my Irish Goodbye skills for this event.

Ok, here is the status of Rick and Susan. We were out of town (driving hours) this past weekend for another type of FAMWG (really it was the fifth year this party has happened!), will be attending an event we first thought might interfere with FAMWG this coming weekend (driving hours), the weekend of the 17-19th we are back at boat for Sock Burning Party (driving hours) and Susan is beginning to tire of all of the lets drive yet again another weekend plan. Is there a train station nearby Maggie's? also since it is a several hour trip for us are there any easy places to stay? I am working the "wow, look at all of these opportunities" line of logic with her right now and I am hopeful (or maybe solo)

OBTW maybe I missed it but are we talking lunch or dinner?

On a side note: We usually are not all this crazy busy with weekend plans every weekend but this has been the 'perfect storm' for events. We are hosting out of town friends on the 24-26th so literally every weekend is booked, and since the beginning of February we have had but one weekend not traveling. Might as well make it a clean sweep is my attitude!

Ok Bob, unless things change you might wanna make sure you can keep that promise on the PBR! Wayne and I are planning to come without our better halves. I would like to lobby for a similar time frame to CBMWG which was a 1 o'clock meet time.

Rick, that was my thought exactly. Mates: I still need a semi final head count. As it stands, we plan to invade Maggies at approximately 1300 hours local time. I will attempt to secure the 2nd floor deck for us. Who's with me!!!
Bob23
(ps. If you were at the recent CBMWG, this event, while being the original Mid Winter gathering, will in no way eclipse the wonder time we had in Virginia. But we'll give it a good shot. And yes, if they do they do not carry PBR, I will risk life and limb to smuggle some in!)

If they don't have PBR, suitable subs are Schlitz, Piels, Riengold, Schaefer or Ballantine.

A few notes:
There is no substitute for PBR.
I am calling Maggies tomorrow to reserve the upstairs room for 12 people, 1300 hours local time on 3/11/2017 . I'm sure we can add a few more stragglers as they come washing in with the tide!
So, I'm still asking for a head count. Who's in?

Kevin & Lesa....The Empty Nest Sailing Crew!

PS. On a side note: Rick, I begun researching a sail across the pond for when we get that PSC. I'm thinking the southern route, no icebergs! :D

Well let's see, umm....Rick and Wayne, that'll be 2!

As far as beer for me, with over 60 taps, i suspect i will be just fine.  :)

Meanwhile this is kinda CBMWG meets FAMWG thus guess it is CBMWGMFAMWG which kinda means that our 2/11 event was FAMWGMCBMWG or more simply another MWG excuse to get together with like minded folks who share a love of small craft, Compac craft to be exact, oh and beer!

Also can linger in the Caribbean for a good while before crossing! I'm working that Flicka for Bob inna couple weeks as her owner invited us to a Sock Burning party down near our boat. We need to promise to keep it under wraps during the gathering, or at least speaking in tongues, as Linda will be present and don't wish to be witness to a Bobacide!

Ok, we have a little issue. On March 11th, Maggies is hosting their annual St. Maggies day fest and are taking no reservations. Angelo (irish name?) said we should have no problem getting in and I did mention we would have  12 people coming from a good distance and that at least one of the crew if he doesn't get his PBR has been known to fly into an uncontrollable rage! He wasn't swayed.
I may call again to try and get someone more sympathetic to our cause.
That's all for now, folks!

It's been a busy last couple of days so I'll call Maggies tomorrow to plead my case. In any event, I say we stick to our original plans to descend upon Maggies next Saturday at 1300 hrs local time. I'm looking forward to this event but I still don't have a definite total head count. So weigh in there, mates and let's let the good times roll!

Well think i may have just finished my last few days on the snow and it's now time to weigh the anchor on sailing season. Was looking at the weather for this coming Saturday, which of course is many days away, but thought it might be prove useful when ya call them again to ask how not having any outdoors area available if it rains will affect indoor accommodations given the crowd they are expecting. Rain sure doesn't bother me as water dries clear!

This is making any Lent considerations with alcohol almost impossible! We always have "relented" for St. Paddies day but St.Maggies!?   :)

The Admiral and I
Kev and Lesa
Allen and Suzie
Maybe Rick but no Susan
Maybe Wayne but seems like not.
No word from Marty so I'll call him tomorrow.
I forget if Matt is coming...whatcha say, Matt? Yay or nay

The Fifth annual Mid Winter Gathering of the East Coast Compac-o-nauts was a smashing success! While the venue was a bit noisy, it was wonderful seeing Marty, Ryan, Allen and Suzie, Kev and Lesa and of course the Admiral made a rare appearance in public. Kev did some filming so hopefully we won't have to wait long before we all can view one of his award winning videos of this epic event!!
Now...it's down to business! Let's talk about the 11th annual Barnegat Bay Bash, shall we? Who will be brave enough to tarnish their reputation by attending this important ( and darn fun) event? I will start a thread soon.
Missing and missed was Brad Cutter (Elk River) who left us on Christmas Eve after a long battle with cancer. We raised our glasses and toasted his name.
For the cause, Bob 23.

Nice get-together at Maggie's Waterfront Café on the Delaware River in Philly. Ryan, Allen and Suzie, Kev and Lesa, Linda and even our FAC, Bob joined together enjoying good food, drink and conversation. To those who couldn't make it, don't worry, we miss you and didn't bad mouth you and there is always next time! Now it's time to start to think about BBB-2017 at Tice's Shoals. Can't wait!

Marty K.

P.S. Got to see pics of Kev's Cape Dory 26... nice. Kev's "Tetra" is available to a loving ComPacOnaut and I hear he's looking for a very trailerable 16!

Well can't say we didn't talk about you all.....we at least tipped a beer to everyone! As far as BBB, sign me up! We were promised by Bob that he would wave the entry fee, drink to the fleet, I don't know something like that! We look forward to meeting more of our northern Compac O' Nauts. (Nod to St. Paddies day!)

Now Kevin, we tried to hook you up with a good deal on a 16 down here for CBMWG. Meanwhile this one has been on the market a long time up your neck of the woods, mostly cuz it's priced kinda high. Never know though.....  http://www.sailboatlistings.com/view/62231.

Maybe we can tempt Marty, Ryan, Allen and Susie to join Kevin and Lisa along with Bob and Linda (for the first time!) to join us for CBMSG 2.0  We must disclose that such trips can be hazardous to your pocketbook, so many boats, so little time!

Fair winds to all, till in port again, Rick and Susan   :)

P.S. Bob, we will soon be at a party with the owner of "your" Flicka.........jus sayin!

Great job, Kevin (as always!). The GoPro does works really well. But, how come my hair doesn't show up!?

Bob - Yup, you got it! Videography refers to the process of capturing moving images on electronic media (e.g., videotape, direct to disk recording, or solid state storage) and even streaming media. The term includes methods of video production and post-production. It was initially equivalent of cinematography (moving images recorded on film stock). (from Bing)
