Hey Blown Away:
In the late '80s we were cruising with our three daughters, 2 through 6 years old.  We bought the best most comfortable child vests from LL Bean.  They had to wear them whenever they were out of the cockpit.  The life jackets worked out well.  We still have them and for that matter the daughters too!

regards charlie

Crotch strap and a handle on the back to be able to lift them out of the water by are the biggest safety things I look for. It depends on how paranoid/safe you want to be, but the next feature is whether the life jacket will flip them from their stomach to their back if they are unable or unconscious. But also important is whether they will actually find it comfortable enough to wear.

I found this one for kids 50lbs and up if anyone following this discussion is interested. Will try to get a little more feedback on this jacket and also check out the LL Bean jackets suggested by Charlie.
