I want to install a boom vang on my 23/IV. What make/model vang do you all recommend? And how do I fasten vang to mast and boom? What is the best boom to vang angle - 45 or 30 degrees?

Hey Dick:  Just installed a 'boom kicker' on our C-27.  Really a good piece of gear.  It not only works as a vang but also replaces the topping lift.  Check out the posting on the C-27 section of the blog...

Good product support from the company too.

Good luck.

I went with a rigid boom vang from Garhauer Marine for my 23. Model: RV 12-1, $275.00. I've used it for two seasons now and I'm very happy with the performance. It's been nice to be able to adjust the boom height and drop the main without a topping lift. I think it looks good too.

I spent about a hundred bucks to make up one for my 23.  Third page addresses the angle.  Works great.

Hi Dick,

Highly recommend vang with a boom kicker (for reasons deisher6 stated).  I worked out this arrangement for mounting both.  1 pin releases the assembly quickly for mast raising/lowering.

I used Harken blocks that I found on Ebay.  The Boom Kicker was a good find there as well.  It has worked out pretty well at the angle you see in the pics...not really sure about the exact angle measurement.
