I've taken my 23PH from Ft Lauderdale across the stream to "West End, Grand Bahama Island, through out the Abacos, crossed back from the "West End" to Stuart Florida without issue.

A good Forcast and off you go.....

Marquesas do have some safe anchorages for shallow draft vessels.
The farthest west side of the main key has a beach with a steep drop off.  Watch out for sharks before swimming there though.

The Chesapeake where we cruise is 30 NM miles across. That makes crossing the bay and back not dissimilar to such a trip you are considering and our little boats make the bay crossings regularly. Same considerations as well, watch the weather! We don't have to watch the sharks as much though!

Go for it!

On the Chesapeake, we don't need sharks, because we have vibrio vulnificus instead.  Wait, I guess they have that in Florida too.  Jellyfish?  Crabs?

I guess we are kind of like Florida, except we get a winter season, albeit not as long as in Lake Erie.

Mas

Yup we are blessed to be on The Bay. A fine place to have a boat.  :)

Speak for yourself...there was a 6 foot bullshark cruising my marina last year way up the Potomac at Colonial Beach.  There are Bullsharks all through the Chesapeake Bay.  It is kind of nerve racking when you swim in some areas because there has been a few sharks caught in the last few years.

Vibrio Vulnificus , nasty, nasty stuff.  It's why one doesn't eat oysters in months without an "r" in it's name. As a general rule.

Vibrio Vulnificus .....wasn't he the Roman consul who was famous for his negotiation techniques at the warm salt baths outside of the city? I heard he could really get under the skin of many!

As far as sharks on the bay....yup their there!

as far as records being kept for such from 1837 to 2015:

5 reported shark attacks in Virginia during this time frame. All but one were on the coast.
1,100 reported attacks along all coasts, rivers, bays and estuaries in the US during this time frame.
The vast majority of all attacks have not been fatal.

since record keeping starting in 1899 for vehicle accidents:
3,200,000 and counting fatalities on the roads. Millions more with less than fatal injuries.

You're safer swimming than driving! Heave I would more concerned about driving down to the boat. Somethin about Jaws, everyone now has the creeps about them. I swam as a child with my family in the same waters Jaws was filmed with dorsal fins seen further out from the beach. Just part of the ocean. People are the problem. If you survive the drive to the beach or boat you now get to dodge the statistics for boating accidents which range from 8,000 to 4,000 cases depending on the year. Approximately 10% are fatalities. Of that 10%, 75% were drownings and 84% were not wearing life jackets. Still worried about sharks?!

So, the moral of the story is wear a lifejacket, then you taste bad and Davey Jones is less likely to eat you for dinner...  but you still have to worry about the land based life forms.  Sounds fair to me.

HeaveToo

I like the way that you summed that up.

Speaking of Davy Jones....Over the years I have lent him a few tools and he never returned him.

If you see him wearing a nice pair of vintage amber lenses sunglasses, kindly ask him to return them to me.

Lost a nice SS multi tool years ago. It wasn't wearing a life jacket. Gone.

No Mas,

I can appreciate your view of the relative dangers compared to shark attacks, but the one thing that could keep me off the road would be to find a big toothy shark sitting in the passenger seat. C'mon don't you watch Sharknado?  '-)

According to the Coast Guard it's not uncommon for Hammerheads to be in the upper Chesapeake. At least here in Florida we can see them coming and have more time to scream.

Seriously however shark "attack" is a misnomer. Attack has the connotation of evil intent, and only Jaws seems to have been capable of that. Sharks simply do what all animals do - they eat to survive. If only we could cross breed them with vegetarians I'd feel better about swimming with them. Of course if they could understand what humans are doing to their world they probably would be attacking.

On topic: Epic don't worry about sharks in your cruising plans, they don't bite Com-Pacs.

P.S. next time out on the water I'll offer some baby seal flavored tofu and watch the reactions, could turn marine biology on it's head.

That's why i keep the sunroof closed if weather service has posted a shark advisory

Biggest fish I ever caught was a 7ft Hammerhead. Other worldly looking. Not on the Chesapeake.

yup we eat way more shark than sharks eat humans.

Oh yeah, i saw Jaws and they eat boats as appetizers! (well the plastic one do anyway)

Guess i would avoid throwing fish parts overboard then going swimming, skip the flashy jewelry, enjoy the cruise! Heck, read "Jaws" for the passage. Maybe the "Poseidon Adventure". :)
