Getting ready to do my volunteering at Warbirds for EAA at Oshkosh.  I woke up at 4 a.m. thinking about packing and the next thing I know I am looking at used Flicka's on the Flicka's site and that led to reviewing used Dana 24's...... Ouch.

I'm always looking at boats.  I finally downsized from a Catalina 28 to my new Horizon Day Cat.  Just don't need a big boat for daysailing.  I think I'll keep the HDC for a long time.  Perfect for Lake Michigan, and it is such a simple boat.  The Dana is a nice looking boat, but to me it looks like they tried to take a 35 foot boat and shrink it down to a 24 footer.  Seems like a compromise...small heavy boat that really should be 35 feet.  Just my 2 cents.  Are you sailing on Lake Michigan or Winnebago?  I am out of Milwaukee.  Not going to the EAA...we have the airshow the same weekend.  The Breitling team will be in Milwaukee.  Apparently the EAA pissed them off.

Nevertheless, the Dana at only 24' is certainly capable of SAFELY taking anything the sea can dish out, and do it with style and aplomb.

I have long admired and respected the smaller craft from Pacific Seacraft.

Just my traditional bent, worth maybe two cents.

i've been a fan of their 27' orion for years, and if the stars align just right, it will be our retirement boat.

Maybe I just think small. There's a Flicka in a local marina that's trying to steal my heart!

I too am a fan of their boats.  Like crazycarl, and Orion 27 seems like a good fit for a retirement boat (about 8 years away for me).
As this gets closer the research will really heat up, and both the Orion and Dana are on the list.  I also like the Pilothouse 32.

The Flicka is sweet but I suspect the wife would feel too couped up on a multi-week cruise.

I sailed a Flicka from Florida across and through the Abacos/back several years ago. Simply amazing lil boat. Super seaworthy and never felt like a 20fter in the big stuff.
Didn't point that high...new that going in...but surprisingly fast from a close reach back. They do get lots of attention when you pull in anywhere!.

A friend of mine has a Pacific Seacraft 37 Yawl.  BEAUTIFUL.  The boat definitely feels solid and it looks like it wants to cross an ocean.

A guy at my old dock at a Dana 24.  That is one expensive boat.  His seemed kind of slow (I would bet that my Compac 23 may be a little quicker than his Dana).  Still, what they crammed into a 24 foot boat is amazing; a separate head with shower, standing headroom, nice galley layout.  A Dana may be a good boat for a single person but a couple would be tight in that boat.

The Orion 27 is a nice boat.  It screams possibilities.  I also like the Pacific Seacraft 34.

The classic looking boats seem to have more appeal.  I dislike the new European look.

My thinking these days would be to get an older boat that had good bones.  Spend the money to fix her up to fit your needs.  True, you will loose your butt when you sell the boat because the upgrades will never get the boat value up to what you have spent on the upgrades, but you will save money over the long haul because it will be less taxes, less to insure, and a few other areas.  A boat that I like for this is the Pearson 365 in a cutter or sloop.

The Flicka and Dana are unequivocally eye candy! Been staring at them for years now and probably why I'm need glasses to see straight. :)
