While a lot of folks on the site here are writing posts filled with anticipation about the upcoming sailing season, plans for new trips, plans for projects to complete before the boat goes in the water... I am slightly disappointed with the realization that our plans for  cruising the  Erie Canal won't come to pass this summer.  In fact, Adagio will remain under wraps for the summer - again..   But, the disappointment will be somewhat short lived..  We made a somewhat radical decision to retire at the end of the school year..  of course, it won't be retirement in the sense that my father thought of it.    here are my thoughts on the whole thing  :)   https://lifeat6mph.wordpress.com/2015/03/
the short story -  we are headed to Mt. Desert Island, home of Acadia National Park  where we will spend the months  June through the end of September, living and working part time at Mr. Desert Campground...  beyond that , we will return to PA where we will spend the months of  October and November lending a hand at the family Orchard in Wapwallopen ... and after that..  well - not quite sure yet.. but I imagine it will be interesting..  one of the thoughts that i am kicking around is getting a part time job at  Jack Frost, the local ski area -  and then back to Acadia in May  -  maybe with Adagio in tow :)

So..  first item on our NEW agenda -  finding some new sailing friends  on Mt Desert Island who might be in need of crew from time to time!  ( not to replace our old friends here, of course )   if anyone has some ideas, feel free to share them  :)    I was thinking of posting our names  at some marinas in southwest harbor  - the beauty of this new path is that we will be working  4 days a week and have 3 days off for  hiking, biking, kayaking and sailing ..  i think that i could live like that for the next 10 years!   jt

That's not radical...it sounds great!!

Now...that Jan. to May slot could easily be filled, by boat, in the Abacos  :-)

Enjoy yourselves whatever you do !!

I've wanted to visit the Bar Harbor area for years now and hopeful that this summer will be it. If so, I'll look you up if I make it. Best of luck in your "retirement".

thanks frank..  good idea for that  late winter early spring slot!      Palmetto.. it would be a great time to visit Bar Harbor..   where are you located?   bring your bike :)   would like to hear more about your interests regarding Mt Desert...

Your plan sounds great! As Buzzy Linhart sang: "The time to live is now!". It seems you've thought it out well and from what I know of you two, this plan cannot fail because you both are on the same page. 3 cheers! You may have a NJ visitor while you're in Maine- no sailboat behind my truck but rather the guideboat on top.

Good luck and have.  As a former high school administrator I can testify that your life will really get busy now.  But everyday is either Saturday or Sunday.

Well you couldn't have picked a better place to spend your summers.  It's been a few years since I've been there but I imagine that it is just as beautiful as ever.

I decided to leave behind the corp 9 to 5 world ten years ago (I'm now 53).  It was the best decision I ever made.  It wasn't an easy decision,  fraught with anxiety, but I did it anyway.  I live very simply,  but my time is MINE.  I spend my winters in FL and travel up north in the summer.  I hope to find a permanent place up north to spend summers this year- Maine is on the short list.

If you are looking for a winter haven I'd be glad to show you around my part of FL.

I hope your new adventure is everything you hope it to be.

wow..thanks for sharing your thoughts!   no question that we are firmly on the side that  time is much more valuable than money..    I saw on google maps thath there actually are loads of moorings just off of the campground..   and it looked like lots were empty..   if we can afford one maybe there will be a compac  in Somes Sound next summer..  who knows, maybe there is already one there.. sure would like to meet up with another compac owner in the area.

we  would love to catch up with anyone from the group who might make it up this summer..  there will always be water for tea on the stove, and  the campground store carries yummy pastries..      Bob..  the sound would be a great place for your  guideboat..  I am wondering about taking my  Bolger dory up - it is already in Phippsburg..  I am sure that rowing on the sound will be wonderful..  Archimedes... thanks for the invite..  you are welcome any time!   jt
