Hello All,

Tackled the broken bobstay today, and left a few pics and some mumblings at:

Still shooting for a mid March date to start  trailer sailing from  LBYC in Long Beach, MS

I completed that same repair last year on my Compac 23 that is a 1989.  It was a pretty easy fix and I like the look of it.  I also am happy with the strength of this (especially since I just added an Asymmetrical spinnaker this winter).

What did you use to bed the new hardware?  I used butyl tape.  From what I read it is the best way to bed hardware.  It worked out well, hasn't leaked at all, and it is supposed to last a long time.

BTW....damaged my bobstay when I was loading the boat on the trailer to bring her home.

I really like the look of the new one too!

**It is an easy fix and repair job**

BTW...Saw your other post.

One thought that I had for repairing the holes is to use starboard and create a new instrument holder and bracket.  I would then screw it into the bulkhead and use butyl tape to seal it.  Currently the Previous Owner did this with wood and he did an okay job.  I am not a big fan of wood because I hate maintenance!

Yep, butyl tape bedded. Enjoyed your pics, nice.

And I may wind up with a panel over that 'holey'area. Will try cleaning, sanding, bit of touchup paint, and buffing first.

I'm interested but can't get your site to work. It comes up but is more or less locked, won't go anywhere.  Wondering if it is my computer or something to do with your site.

I'm doing mine out of stainless steel chain. I like the look.

Bob23, that will look salty !

Butyl tape is good stuff.

Your boat looked good too.  It was a good photo documentation of the replacement.  It would be a good place to send someone who was doing that job (great reference)

I think that it also helps if you trailer with your anchor on the bow sprit.  I have that big honking 22lb anchor up there.  I had a 33lb on my last boat.

You may consider trying to mess with Gel coat.  It is tough to match it exactly but I have seen people who did it.  Marine Tex is also good for patching holes like those and it sands well.

I absolutely love bow sprits on sailboats.  They look great and they are a great place for an anchor.

When I complete most of my work, in a few years, I will eventually replace the lewmar claw with a Mason Supreme or Ronca in the 25 pound range.
