Things to do when not sailing

So, you cant sail all the time, and in the meantime, I have a bit too many hobbies. I have never drank really, or smoked, or anything else, so my money has always gone to supporting my hobbies solely which has really had me involved in too many things at times.
Now, I started a small cash business to help me afford tools, and boat stuff, along with my new obsession of working out at a local gym.

I started turning prior to getting struck by lightning and recently retaught myself how. Spent some money and get setup to make these:

Bottle stoppers, and I am also making pens and keychains, ceiling fan pull stops, and a few ornaments as well.

I think at some point I might actually try to finish the boat in the attic this winter, maybe, if I pull myself off the lathe, and the house, and well...... like I said, too many things I have to do, and end up doing......

So what do you do to keep busy on the side? Anything that you sell, or go through phases making?

Very nice Mac.  There is something relaxing about working with wood and creating something.  I recently started woodcarving just for fun.

Here is a pic of my first four carvings.

Made this caricature of a friend as a gift.  The pelican on a post was for Brenda.

Another gift for a friend.

And finally a devilish yet happy wood spirit.

Having fun learning a new hobby!

My other hobbies are getting expensive!  I need to find some winter hobbies that don't cost so much.

My main hobbies are sailing and fly fishing.  This is great....other than it leaves a few months for me to contemplate things because the weather isn't cooperating.

After sailing and fly fishing comes working on the boat.  Yes....I am considering this a hobby.  This also includes doing canvas work and other things.

Problem is that materials are expensive.  I have several projects in mind but boat budget is shot because the projects are on the lower end of the list.  My next project will be whipping the new running rigging that I have coming.

Btw...the woodwork you guys are doing is beautiful!

I tried woodcarving once.  Eighteen stitches and two fingertips later ( 5 minutes), I quit.

I have a lot of interests, but my two main non sailing hobbies are distance running and woodworking.  Not as creative as carvers and turners whom I admire, I make furniture.  Some recent pieces:

I run to stay in shape and for the camaraderie.  Hold a number of state age records for various distances.  The race director says that the Navy Nautical Ten Miler is the only race in the world that is measured in nautical miles and since I set the 67 YO course record this past June I also own the world record.  Not sure I believe him but it is a good yarn.

I absolutely love to modify the interior of my trailered boats with homemade storage modules which I design and fabricate myself. Also make my own sails to improve sailing performance of my sailboats.

Otherwise, I love making small boats and am well into a Kayak build at this time.

ATVs and Motorcycles: road and offroad, particularly offroad....talk about expensive!

(getting too old for all of them, but what the heck)

Work, read, imbibe a bit, maybe a bit more.
Row-either indoors or outside on the Guideboat "Poco Loco". Did I mention work?
And...shoot my mouth off here at the site.
But, what I really enjoy doing is dreaming...and writing.

I am really impressed at the talent on this board.  Apparently it is true that ComPac owners are really talented....  other than me. LOL  Let's see what do I do in the off season.  Well my other hobbies involve bike riding or the pedal variety, writing textbooks, and anything to do with water.  We follow the soft variety of water South in the winter - leaving this weekend hopefully, so I get to sail just about every month of the year.  Up North in Illinois I race an MCScow on weekends at Lake Summerset, where we also have a kayak, ski boat, and a waverunner.  Waverunner is for the kids and some of the older grandkids - I rarely go on it.  I also do some contract work for a Canadian Company that manufactures automotive trainers.  Basically I try very hard to stay busy and out of the bars and jails.        Al

I mentioned canvas work.  Here is a picture of the window covers that I did for my old boat:  http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm199/HeaveToo/SpiritofLibertyCanvasWork_zpsb86e5e4e.jpg

I have done winch covers, wood covers, sun shades, and other things for the boat.  I also did a cover for my Lifesling pack.

The cool part is that I have paid for my cheap sewing machine (a rebuilt old one) about 10 times over by doing a lot of my own projects.  I also get a good feeling when I see a project work correctly for me.

I have to wait a while to do some canvas work for Saga.....Spending the money else where right now.
