Is this year correct?

Hello,
I am seriously considering a compac 16 for my next sailboat. I saw the following ad in Maine for a 1998 comapc 16 but it doesn't seem to have the gear that is described on this site typical of that vintage. Can anyone help?

Not likely that young...  Bowsprits started in 1984 (http://cpyoa.geekworkshosting.com/forum/index.php?topic=42.msg64#msg64).

It's good looking from the outside for a 1978, which would fit the MK-1 design it appears to be (looks an awful lot like my 1975 but has a stripe down each side).  To be sure, ask for the HIN.  Missing a rudder in the second photo (kick up portion)... Seems like it would have to be immaculate and have everything for the asking price compared to others.

Maybe $3K if the sails are new and the motor is good.
If you google: The Sailboat Company, you will see four 16's for sale including a'98.
Can also look at NADA for market value.
A real 1998 will have a bow sprit, stainless steel pulpit, probably a traveler with mid-boom sheeting and maybe a centerboard.

Yep, that's the only way to know for sure.

It looks exactly like our old 1982 with the gold stripe, alum pulpit and no bowsprit--and no stern rail or genoa tracks.

I think 1998's would be the XL or CB (centerboard)version...and as carry-on mentioned would have minimally stainless bow pulpit, and probably genoa tracks, stanchions,lifelines. These versions also had a small popup lexan hatch on the forward deck whereas the older versions just have a passive scoop vent.

Now the original buyer may of requested the old design accessories, but doubtful.  One way to tell the version 1's apart easily is they have an aft locker leading to inside the cabin. All others have fuel lockers with teak wood "cover", with no access to the cabin. The deck molds were different in this regards.

I call bs on the year for sure.  Still, could be a nice boat.

Wow, thanks a lot for your input, you've confirmed my suspicions, I've asked for the serial/i.d # but have not heard from them yet. I am set on getting the Compac 16, inspired by a lot of the comments and reviews here on the forum. I'm not sure I'll buy this particular one, but the Compac 16 seems to fit all of my wants - easy to trailer and launch, stable and safe, a good looking boat, well constructed, relatively easy to maintain etc...

5000 is an absurd price for that boat. looks much the same as my 76.

Both boats in Ma. look good. The '87 sure is a VG, price if the picture is recent. 6HP. is too much weight aft on a 16.

Thanks for the tips on the boats, I may go to MA to check them out. I spoke to Casco Bay Yachts in Maine who is selling that one for someone else and it sounds like it is an '83, not a '98. He says the registration says '98, so I guess someone got taken or is trying to pass off the boat as a newer one. I told him to contact the owner and tell him, I'll still go to see it since it is on my way this weekend and maybe make an offer depending on what I find. I would prefer a later model, the one in NC sure looks nice, I do like the idea of the bowsprit and forward hatch on the later models.

I hope you find your boat, Marcel!  One of the beauties of the CP-16 is, if your boat doesn't have all the features you want, you can add them on without huge skills or expense.  Most of the advice and instruction you'll need for any boat job is right on this forum!  Enjoy the boat shopping--  Gretcheng

I did see the boat that was originally advertised as a 1998 in Freeport yesterday, it actually was a 1981 with a 1980 trailer. I offered him 2300 but haven't heard back. It did need a little work and the trailer needed new springs and axle soon. I am still looking for a slightly newer one and hopefully by next spring I'll find something I'll be happy with. Hope you all on the forum are enjoying your compacs and getting some great weather.
