Steering Woes

So after a 10 mile sail this past weekend, I noticed my steering pulling to the left.  After an inspection today...I found this:

Before this happened the steering felt very tight, no play at all. Any hints on how to adjust the tension / play in the steering system?

Does this look like the original setup?

I'm hoping Allure2sail might have an extra steering bracket!!??

Also, after seeing this...what do people do for an emergency tiller setup? Does Com-Pac sell one?

Thanks!

Hey MonnentSurf:
Wow! Good thing it did not fail entirely.  I wonder what caused the break. Do you lock your wheel when you are not using it?

Wes and I just went through the steering of our C-27's.  He has cable and sheaves, and I have cables running through conduits.  I could not tell from the pictures what you have.  However judging from the number of zip ties your setup is original.

There are some pictures and notes on the C-27 section under my name.

Yes there is an emergency tiller available.  I used it to hold my rudder centered while the wheel was centered and I tightened up the turnbuckles on the quadrant.  I thought that I should have taken a picture of it then.  I will later this week and post it.

Thanks for the post and pictures.

I think I have one in the garage...I will look for that and the rest of the shift bracket tomorrow (Tuesday).

Bruce, Thanks for all the quick communications!  I'm not sure if you're writing anything in you reply's to my Personal Messages...I'm only getting my original message copied back to me.

Bruce...any luck finding the quadrant?  Sorry to be a pest...I'm jonesing to sail...ha!

Hi:
Found the quadrant I'm going to clean it up and check for any cracks. I asked someone to send me a PDF file of the ComPac parts price list but have not received it yet. I usually get 50% of a replacement from Hutchens when I sell things off the parts boat. Still locking for the clamp for the shift bracket for someone. is it you? Found the bracket but not the clamp that holds the cable to the bracket (I assume that's what broke). Do you have a price sheet from ComPac?

Funny thing, mine failed today! The collar on the shaft came loose causing the quadrant to drop. It would
only turn 1/4 each way and hit the water and fuel tank. I guess the set screw came loose through vibration. Re set it and used loctite. It happened I as we pulled out of the slip. Had it happened underway, would be a difficult fix, and emergency tiller would not help.   AndrĂ©

GREAT!  I'll call compac today about the parts list/price.  For now, all I need is:
-transmission shift bracket (no need for the clamp)
-quadrant (most important!)
-Both ice box covers (if not rotted and stinky like mine)

How would I go about paying you?  Paypal would be the best if you're signed up.

For future use...I called Com-pac, who directed me to Edson for all steering related parts.

The Quadrant is part # 676BR-8.  1.25" rudder post with .25" key on the main boady (which faces aft). It retails for about $450 - $550...depending on who you buy it from.

Bruce - $250 for the quadrant and shift bracket (and ice box covers if you have 'em)?

Allure2sail

Hi Charlie:
I'll take a look at the ice box covers today and let you know their condition. Bracket off and quadant here. Have to check to see if it is the quadrant same as on my boat. Compac used a different pedestal on the parts boat, I think it is a Merimar. Should be the same but just want to check. I'll get back to you later today...honest !

Hi:
Does you quadrant say EDSON New Bedford on it? What is the diamenter of the rudder shaft?
Bruce

MomentSurf

Yes, its an Edson Quadrant.  Ruder shaft is 1.25".  Quadrant is an 8" radius.

Allure2sail

I'll measure the shaft diameter on my good boat and the hole diameter on the quadrant off the parts boat in the morning. Rudder is long gone.
