need lower shroud replaced. Where to go?

Hi,

Just acquired a 1982 Compac 19.  Everything is very clean and good so far as I can see except for one lower shroud which is compromised at the upper fitting (I'm sure there's a name for those...).  This is the older '19 with one stay/shroud on each side.  Two strands just dangling there.  Clearly I need to replace.  Is there a provider of these shrouds precut and affixed with end fittings?  Or do I just order the cable and affix myself?  Can you buy this stuff online?   Is there a specific type of cable for this size boat?  The manual isn't much help.   Recommendations/suggestions appreciated.

According to one online source, the measure of the lower shroud on the Compac '19 is 135" plus three inches for attaching to upper/lower fittings.  Total 138".

BTW, I'd rather pay the extra if necessary to purchase/replace the upper/lower fittings as well, have it done right, and know that the entire unit is good-to-go.

Thanks for your help.

My feeling is that when one goes, the others might be close behind.

I have twice done this ,  on different boats, with great success: WM rigging. You send them your shrouds, and they make up new ones, and send them back. Vee-ola!

I just went to my local boatyard [Great Lakes Yacht Service in Sturgeon Bay] and had them make me a replacement while I waited. About $70.00 for my dolphin.
There must be 5 to 6 places that will do this within 40 miles of my home.

I've had good luck with Rigging Only.
They do a great job at a reasonable price.

Thanks for the suggestions.  Being a newbie, I'm not even sure what's available locally.  Time to find out.  If nothing, I'll be packing it off to West Marine.

epritz ... Swabbie what area do you live in? What water are you planning on gliding over?

Just curious.

I'm in Ithaca, NY on Cayuga Lake.

Disassembled and took the frayed shroud down to Fingerlakes Boating Center.  Not a problem.

The previous owner had the turnbuckle and all the hardware at the base coated in some kind of tar goo, then wrapped in white electrical tape.  Had to cut all that away.  What's up with that?  Looks like it had been there for years.  Clearly no tension adjusting going on.  But it did keep the hardware intact.  Looks good as new now that the gunk is off.

What was that stuff?  Should I reapply?

Lower shroud replaced.  Bilge hose replaced.  ID numbers in place.  Now I just need to get this boat in the water!

Ithaca is a good place to be when you need marine services! LOTS of options. Kept our Suncat at Finger Lakes Marine Services on the East shore when we lived in Cortland.

The Sailboat Shop in Skaneateles is very close to you and they are a Com-Pac dealer. I'm not sure what his inventory is but it is worth a shot.  I purchased my Eclipse through John Jablonski at The Sailboat Shop.

Funny you should mention this problem. Two days ago ...
We were going to put Steve's boat in the water but I saw five wires unwoven from under a swedged clevis.
That took care of that launching till fixed.

Today 12-June-2014
On my buddies boat, a Com-Pac 19
One new clevis under the spreader
One new length of wire rope
Reuse turnbuckle
40 minutes
