CP 19 Screens: A possible answer.

In my down time (scarce!) I have possibly come up with a set of screens for the 19. The idea thus far is a plastic bonded ring securing a nylon screen in between. I have a builder for the screens, a professional that I have the opportunity to work with due to my job, dealing with him on custom windows for boats.

I have been straining my brain on the clips though.... The 2 original SS clips fit into those grooves, one is a split clip, the other is split but has a bent part on each side for handling.
The screen would fit into the spot between them like originally setup.

But what do we use for the SS clips if we dont have them?
I need ideas.... because so far my ideas are void of any outcomes. I have sourced 304 SS rod, that I might in house bend and remake the clips, but I dont know if 304 is the right SS (I prefer 316, which I cannot source) and I am unsure if maybe Brass would be better?

Once  I have a good clip figured out, I will have the guy build me a few prototypes to test. But the screens are no good to us if not able to be held in place.....

Weigh in on this.......I appreciate all input.

Some years back I fabricated screens for my CP 19 out of 4" schedule 40 PVC pipe. The pipe, as I recall, was slightly too large in diameter to fit nicely in the external port flange, so I turned down a short length of the pipe slightly on the lathe, so it would fit snugly.  andI cut 5/8" sections, I then used a clear adhesive to glue fiberglass screen to the rings, let the adhesive dry, trimmed the screen, and tapped the finished assembly into the port. Bronze screen would probably look the best, and the PVC rings could be sprayed with plastic paint to get a less conspicuous finish than the white PVC.

That is actually a neat idea.

Thanks for that!

Does anyone know the diameter (Of the actual rod) of the SS clips? I have made a jig and want to order some of that rod to try a experiment making them up.......

In a slight thread drift, I can personally attest that when PeterG, (now known as P23) puts his engineering mind in gear, interesting things happen. I've sailed on a few of his boats and seen the improvements and I'm closely watching what he does with his new 23. The midboom sheeting on his 19 was quite unique.
We met on the very first Barnegat Bay Bash, then known as the Tice's Shoals Rendezvous and have been friends ever since. I've found him to be a reliable source of sailing information as well as an authority on pizza, red wine and bourbon. And Admiral Beckys fig jam is to die for.
P: I wonder if you could use 4" ABS which is black already?

One of the problems with the standard screens is you can't leave the boat unattended to ventilate it as rain will get in.

Solution is to either put little buckets under the port inside, attached to the ceiling eye where the port hook attaches or use a flange on the outside of the port to direct water away from the port.  I'm using 90 elbow PVC (3" style which has a 4" exterior flange) with screens glued and taped to the end.

The elbow fits inside the port, which does not seal it, but fends off most of the water in rain storms.

The downside is they are not too attractive and they are a tripping hazard if you like to step on the toe rail area next to the doghouse (I don't usually step there so not a problem for me).

Salty, I took your idea and used a 3" 45 street elbow trimmed back a bit. It extends only 1.5" into the deck space.  I suppose one could cut a std short radius 90 in half & get two 45's.

I have a few ports with screens. Could these pvc gizmos just be stuck on the outside, and leave the current screens in place? I could see giving that a try.
