First post here on the CPYOA.

I have been reading different topics and find the members very knowledgeable and informative.
Sailing Keel Boats primarily on Lake St Clair {Connector of the Great lakes} here in Michigan for the last 13 years.

After following all the positive reviews for some time  I recently acquired a neglected 1980 Compac 16 project boat.

The rigging and hardware are in great shape. Everything will have to be re-bedded.

All teak and tiller to be stripped and sealed.

2 sets of sails. 1 set 4 years old [receipt presented by previous owner} hardly used with reef point added. Has bolt rope feeds at foot and Luff.

I can see that the Keel was never struck or the exterior of the hull damaged. Integrity is still intact.

I am handy with fiberglass repair so I was not put off on the task that I saw coming.  To start off I had to demo the forward bunk and compression post {water Damage}  and peel off both sides of the keel skin to get it to dry out as water settled into it. I will also be restoring the top are of the bilge with concrete and resurfacing it with epoxy and mat.

I will be throwing a few question out for advice on a few other issues latter on.

Fair Winds to all....

Cats Paw,

Welcome aboard. This is THE PLACE to ask any questions you might have.

Quite a task you have taken on. Be sure to have FUN working on your C-16.

Next to actually sailing, I love working on boats!

I HEARD THAT TIM! I lurketh not for personal gain but only to help fund my sailing addiction.
Catspaw...it's true that there is a $5000.00 initial enrollment fee and that's just to do the background check. If we find that you are indeed eligible, there may be additional posting and membership fees.
But, hey- it's Thanksgiving eve and you seem like a nice guy so out of the goodness and generosity of my heart, I'm waiving all fees for you provided that you promise not to overeat tomorrow!
Welcome and we look forward to hearing about your adventures aboard your new 16. Sure, you have a little work to do but investing time and $ into a Compac sailboat is rewarding and well worth it.
While here, you may encounter some members who'll tell you strange stories about me extorting money from new members. Don't you believe a word of it...rumors, that's all it is. Vicious rumors.
Again, welcome!

Welcome Cats Paw.......I think you'll find this site an excellent source for advice and information, both general and model-specific.The cp-16's shallow draft should allow you to use a whole lot more of the lake.I attended the Jack Lavernze Sailing School at Jefferson Beach a looong time ago(I'm assuming your a fellow Michigander,my apologies if your in fact Canadian).Good luck on your project and keep us up-dated.Remember..these guys love pictures.........Doug

Welcome!  I have an '83 cp16, and I live in the Ann Arbor area.  I've sailed on st. Clair a couple of times and hope to do some more. Once you get your boat lakeworthy, it would be great to sail together.

Will look forward to sailing a St Clair Compac Meet Up!

During the balance of this winter I will be gathering all the materials and supplies for the project so I will be ready to get things moving in the early spring.
