I found a bronze 1/2" OD by 3/8" ID by 1" long bushing : is that a proper size for the CP23 rudder gudgeon ?

DougN

That's what I just used.I would have liked one a little longer but the 1" works fine. What a difference, for only a few dollars I don't know why I waited so long.

NateD

I didn't measure the length of the ones I got from Hutchins, but 1/2" OD and 3/8" ID is definitely correct and about 1" long sounds right. I didn't  drill my gudgeons all the  way through, just enough to sink the new bushing into.

Good tip Nate.I'm doing a friends 23 this week and that's exactly how we'll do it.Thanks......Doug.

There shoulder bushings too from Ace Hardware, right? Insert these bushings shoulder to shoulder, you'll need four bushings, four flat washers, a s.s. bolt and a nyloc nut.
Plus a 1/2 drill bit with the shank of the bit turned down for a 3/8 inch chuck.
Use a 3/8 inch drill motor because that will cuttle up to the transom for the best possible straight shot through the bore.
Drill one at a time. You may find that the factory had placed in the bore a plastic insert, It'll just drill out along with the aluminum.
Hint: A 1/2 inch drill motor typically is too large in diameter and will force the bit through the bore at a unwanted angle.
The assembly was assembled with copious amounts of Permatex Neversleaze.

These bushings in the picture are ONLY 3/4 inch long. Couldn't find longer ones. But they work just fine.

The aluminum pieces shown below have been washed with an industrial conversion coat for aluminum and powder coated Hammer Tone Grey after being de~gassed and cooled in an oven..

Good tip on the drill size...I wouldn't have thought of that. And amen to the "Neverseeze". I use it on all my mooring tackle and even after 2 years under salt water, I can still easily take apart the shackles. 'Mazing stuff.

I purchased a long shaft drill bit at a big box store for $9.00 that made it much easier to drill out the holes without jamming the drill against the transom.  I believe it was about 12" long.
