WTB: Com-Pac 16 (The closer to Northern CA the better)

I am searching hard and would like to purchase a ComPac 16 Sailboat with trailer, the closer to Lake Tahoe the better. I see lot's of CP-16's for sale in the midwest, northeast, and southeastern states. Not much is available at a reasonable price on the west coast. I prefer a 1980 model year or newer vessel with original gelcoat. I am not to keen on painted topsides, painted freeboard, or bottom paint. My boat will be dry sailed and the paint just equates more maintenance. I have no need for an outboard motor.

So I was contacted by a fellow with a CP 16 a few hours drive away from me. His asking price was $5,000 and he was not willing to negotiate a lower price. His description of the boat was as follows:

"Its a 1984 Model, Main and jib is in very good condition,
The boat has been painted with brown bottom paint.
Standing rigging appears good, age unknown.
The boat has had gelcoat repair at the bow, appears slightly discolored.
Hutchins galvanized trailer."

I thought that the boat should be priced somewhere in the $2,000-$2,500 range based on the year and description. NADA guides gives a value of $1,870 for an '84 CP 16.

Am I way off base thinking that $5,000 is way overpriced?

Agree with your thnking. He'll never get that price. $5000 would be on the high side for a 19 of that age and condition (I paid $3500 for mine), let alone a 16. Keep looking - good luck.

I would call and tell him that a surveyor told you that at best a 16 like that is worth around 2 tops.

Maybe he would rethink his stance......

Also you could look up BUC values. that is the boat values.

Yep, that's way too high.

More like $2500 tops, and only that high because of the location in CA (they are not a dime a dozen out west).

The only CP16's selling for 5 grand are the newest, cleanest and probably centerboard or at least XL versions (lifelines, all upgrades)

Keep looking, you'll find one.

   every once in a while i toy with the idea of selling my 16. and then we go for a sail. rig it and launch it in a wink of the eye, sail for 4 or 5 hours or like last wednesday for 20 miles, come back to the dock with smiles on our faces a quick retrieval and tear down then a short drive home and into the garage. with it put snuggly away i think "could this be any better?" hope you find a good one and have half the fun we have had

Thanks for the good wishes. I have worked professionally on many sailing vessels over the years and owned a couple of boats in that time. I just recently sold the latest one to generate the capital for a CP16. All of them have brought me deep joy. I very much look forward to finding a CP16 to move into my next phase of sailing.

I found a nice gentleman who sold me his well cared for '81 CP-16. He found me through this thread. Thank you to everyone who provided assistance in my boat search.

Good on you! Sure looks like a fine 16. Blessings on the folks you took care of that little cruiser. Whatever you paid will soon be in your wake but a good boat is long remembered.

That is one sweet looking '81.  Congratulations.  I don't know what I would do with a boat in that good of condition.  I'd be lost without a long to-do list.
