During a sail last Saturday in some pretty strong wind I (actually my daughter) noticed quite a bit of movement in the deck and compression post.  When I got Sanctuary back to the garage I removed the teak plywood in the forespeak to find what I had suspected.  Dry rot has taken its toll where the compression post bolts to the forespeak.

It looks like it is only one panel but I am wondering what some of you who are more experienced with the construction of the CP16 think.

Would you replace just the vertical panel or redo the whole thing?

Thanks for the help!

I would remove the post and fix the ply wood using rot doctor products, provided the repair is hidden from view.  You can use a new piece of ply to shore up the rotted spot, provided the rotted area is small.  Rot doctor has an epoxy that saturates wood so this wont happen again.  I'm surprised it happened in the first place.

Well, I got the post out and started poking around with an awl.  Foud that the whole panel was soft.  I started to tear it out and found that the rotten spot extended out from where the plywood was in contact with the pour-in foam.  I have removed all of the rotten stuff and have made new parts.  The epoxy is curing on them as we speak.

The repair has ended the sailing for the season but she will be ready to go come spring.  As long as Sanctuary has my stall in the garage (can't expect my wife to scrape the frost and snow off her car) I am also going to remove the ugly bottom paint.  Since I plan to trailer I am planning to just give the bottom a good waxing.

I am trying West Marine's Peel Away.  I have the test spot working right know and it seems to be softening the paint pretty well.  Can't wait to see her with that stuff gone.
