Would you sail a Com-Pac 23/3 in San Francisco Bay?

I've never sailed in the San Francisco Bay but I have flown over and driven buy it a number of times.  Some days the winds look pretty stiff.

Anyway, my wife and I are thinking about moving from North Carolina to the Palo Alto, California area and I'm trying to decide if it's worth it to move the boat out there.  If the 23/3 is too small then I might as well sell it and look for a bigger used boat when I get there.

What would it cost to move a 23' boat and trailer from North Carolina to California?  I don't want to pull it that far with our SUV.

For moving the boat, try www.uship.com. You plug in the zip code where it is to be picked up, the zip code where you want it delivered and a range of dates for pickup and delivery, then people bid to tow it for you. You can plug the info into the site and it will give you a range of prices for similar items moved between those areas.

I found someone (with a commercial license and $1 mil. bond) to tow my 23 from SC to MN for about $1,000, and I was pretty flexible with the final delivery date. My guess is it will cost you about $2,000.

NateD's suggestion is good. It pays to shop around.

I had a 16 foot boat and trailer hauled (not towed) from the east coast to the west coast for $2,000. Most quotes were in the $2,000+ range, towed. Some bids were up to $4,400! That was about three years ago. I believe I got a good deal though because the hauler was towing a much larger boat to the SF bay area and was able to haul mine on the roof of his rig on the same trip. He was set up to do that so it was quite safe. Being flexable on scheduling helped too.

I really wanted that boat and I've not regretted it even once so i guess it was worth it to me.

I have sailed on SanFrancisco Bay in a Cal 27, J30  out of the Berkely Marina and a one design 38 whose class I cannot recall on both sides of the bridge.  I think that a 23 would be great on the upper bay.  That part was not much different than say the Neuse or Pamlico Sound, except mostly deeper and less mosquitoes.  I have sailed a C16, C23 and C27 (I had a bad case of 3 ft itis) most places from Wilmington to Washington while stationed at Camp LeJeune and Cherry Pt.

I think a 23 could handle the big winds that accompany the San Francisco Bay. However, I think you would be happuerwithsomethongwith a bitmoredraft. It is a lot deeper there. A deeper draft means higher pointing, which means less tacking. The com-pacs were made for skinny water.

Don't know too much about them, but check out a Santana. I think that would be the San Fran Com-Pac equalivent. Obviously, they are not as pretty, but they are still trailerable.

Sure why not? Just make sure when you ship water that none of it goes below...make a cork.

Enjoy the ride. skip.
