Hello all,

WOW, this new forum that Captain Kurt has developed is awesome. I am pleased to have the opportunity to be a moderator. The power of the Internet to bring people with similar likes together and to share ideas and educate is amazing. These forums also allow us to make friends over long distances. With this in mind I think it is interesting to share biographical information so we can get a better idea of who we are talking too.

My wife, Carole, and I own and sail a 1990 CP16 on a large fresh water lake about an hour's drive north of Philadelphia PA. This very scenic and pristine state operated facility, Lake Nockamixon, has a marina with 576 slips. We sail there literally every weekend.

I have been sailing off and on, mostly on, since I was 19 years old. I got married at 21 and my wife and I always liked boats, both power and sail,  and the seashore. After 37 years of marriage we still like sailing or, put another way, after 37 years of sailing we still like being married to one another. I designed and built a boat in the late 70's and Carole made the sails. It was a cross between a Laser and an M class scow and it sailed very well. We eventually got tired of trailersailing, sold the boat and got involved with power boats for 10 years. We got back into sailboat ownership in 1998 when I bought an old but beautiful GP-14. We got a slip in the marina at Lake Nockamixon and spent every summer weekend up there. But, we opted for a larger and stiffer sailboat and we took some demo sails with our dock neighbors. One ride on a CP16 sold us. The next winter we shopped around and found our 1990 CP16 which we really enjoy.

My other hobby is building ad flying model helicopters and airplanes. When our two son's were small I spent many enjoyable weekends flying with them. With them both grown and on there own, the CP16 is terrific for Carole and I. One caveat though, we took our almost 3 year old grandson and his mom and dad out on the boat the past two weekends and he loved it. So, eventually, we may need a larger craft as more family members get involved.

I also hold an advanced class amateur radio license (WB3JJF) and I was an active ham operator for many years. I work in technical sales for a small specialty fabrication company that gets me involved in many intersting projects. I spend 30% of my work time involved with helicopters, UAV's and airplane related stuff. I spend another 30% of my time invoved with museums and interactive exhibits. I even designed a sailing exhibit several years ago for a Viking Museum.

Well, I have rambled on enough here for one day.

Welcome Gil! I, too, am new to this forum.
I am a relative newcomer to sailing but have wanted to do it most of my adult life. My first wife didn't like boats much and I nealy back-doored a sailboat until a freak tornado destroyed the boatyard it was in and split it into 3 pieces. My new wife loves them (especially sailing) and we enjoy it so with our 6 year old son Jeffrey!

We started with a Cal 20, but disliked the deep keel vs the shallow water we sail around. We are in the process of restoring a 1977 Com-Pac 16 with trailer that we picked-up for $700 with trailer but no sails. We were lucky enough to have some sails with our Cal sails that fit it pretty well until we can score some new ones next year. She's not it too bad shape and won't be too much of a project. We can't wait to sail the shoals of NC's coast out to Cape Lookout and over to Ocracoke Island!

Gil and Carole,

Michael here aka (Lostsailor) I'm really not sure what to say maybe..... Welcome Back. I do remember reading some of your post in the past. Your knowledge and willingness to help others is greatly appreciated.

I also make my living in aviation as an A&P working on US Marine Corps UC 35 D's out of Cherry Point NC.

I am presently sailing a 1987 Cp 16 II named Wayfaring  Stranger hailing from Beaufort NC,  (she is now up for sale). I learned to sail on a Laser 2 and then promptly purchased a Cp 19 after reading an article on the web by Jobst Vanderly. He detailed his selection criteria, upgrades and a few of his cruising exploits in his Search for a Comfortable Pocket Cruiser (Com-Pac 19). That's all it took, I was sold, I had to have my one of my own. I purchased Sanity 16 years ago. I am now on my third Com-Pac (19, 23, 16). Once my 16 sells I will seek out another CP19, putting right back to where I started. According to Carol my partner in life and all things important, who also loves sailing, she has always said I will not be happy until I get back the one that got away another 19 that is. I think she might be right.....at least this time.

Once again welcome back Gil and Carole.

Hi Gill:
I remember you from back in the day. Even though your'e a veteran, a hearty welcome is in order. Why don't you be a saint and tell us what youv'e been up to for the last 9 years. And don't make up some story about you and your Compac being abducted by aliens!

Been doing what I always have done, working, sailing, etc. I live the same place I lived the past 41 years so not much has changed. We moved up to the CP 19 seven years ago and this is our sixth season sailing this wonderful boat on Lake Nockamixon here in PA. I "retired" 3 1/2 years ago but I still work, sometimes too much. My retirement field of endeavor is ground transportation as I work for a limousine service.

Thanks for the "Welcome Back" as it is good to be back on this forum.

Cheers, Gil
