Extended mast

The previous owner of my newly-acquired CP16 had extended the mast about 18" to allow the boom to clear a higher bimini.  I haven't had a chance to sail her yet but expect there would be some effect on the boat's handling, especially on a reach.  I was wondering if anyone else has tried a similar modification.

Update:  Guess I misunderstood the prior owner -- on closer inspection, the mast extension looks more like 8", not 18", so big a deal.  By the way, I've now had a chance to sail her and loved it!
