Sail number?

I have just bought a 1977 CP16 and don't think the sails are original -- but they are old.  The main bears the number "12" but it is so tattered that I should have it replaced.  There are no numbers on the jibs.

It may be that I don't need a sail number at all for my daysailing, but don't know. How is the sail number selected?  (I don't mean the formal racing yacht numbering convention, but the kind of two-digit numbers like this.)

Do the original sails bear numbers?  If so, is there a pattern to the sail numbering?

Sail numbers are usually assigned by the class association for a specific make and model of boat - typically a racing class boat. The numbers are assigned when an owner first registers a boat. Boats like Flying Scotts, Lightenings, etc. typically have active class associations that assign numbers to newly registered boats. You can buy and sail any class boat without any registration or sail number.

Although I have seen numbers on CP16 mainsails I have no clue where they came from since we are not typically a racing class of boat. There is absolutely no requirment for a sail number, especially for day sailing.

My 1990 CP16 has a ComPac logo and the 16/3 designation.

Hi Gil,

For what it's worth, the number on my CP-16 main sail is the same as my hull number 688.  The sail is in good condition, but it could very well be the original.

The number on my main is the hull number - 1014.

Thanks folks, for the insight.  It seems that my two best options are to just remove the number or to put the hull number on the main (which has some appeal).

Best regards to all,

B.Hart

when I got my 16 it came with a very worn main sail with the com-pac logo and a #63on the sail.

Sail number is typically the same as the hull #.  Found on the main with a class logo.  Only required for racing.  I would not try to take #s off a sail, as it can leave a sticky mess.  New numbers not required, unless you just want them.

In case of a Perf fleet, when 2 boats of diifferent kinds have the same #, one boat -usually the jr. member has to change to a different #.  Of course that is only if requested by the race comitty for scoring purposes.

On the CP19 made in 1996 we have no number on sail, just Com-Pac LOGO circle/arrows. These are the sails that came with the boat # 588 from Johnson Sails. skip.
