I finally got the last of the three videos done promoting our sailing club at the St Pete Boat show.    What I wanted to show you occurs at 48 through 1:22 into the video -  Bruce Bingham took us sailing one perfect afternoon last summer.  Look at how he steers his 28 Cape Dory and how at one with his boat he is.  I ve never seen anything quite like it.

The opening scenes by the way were shot in Pass-A-Grille Channel on the way to a burial at sea - but don t tell anyone.

If you are in the area stop by the Boca Ciega Yacht Club booth in tent one booth 131 on the downtown St Petersburg waterfront.

Now we can get back to filming HideAway - Our next cruise will be to Mullet Cay over Thanksgiving - a real challenge because the entrance to Bunce s Pass is unmarked and the shoals extend a good half mile into the Gulf- there are no accurate charts either - Gulp

Pretty much at ease for a 23^ list.  Looks like a lot of weather helm though, on my 19 I'd be putting in a reef.

Yeah I noticed the weather helm when I took the tiller.  The CD28 has long been on my A list, but after that sail I found I just don t fit.  The cockpit is too wide to brace my feet for one and considering its size the 28 feels really small down below.  See Bruce's article in Good ole Boat.   I was frankly shocked at the weather helm.  That being said Bruce has the boat trimmed for full race mode and he did win that BOTY trophy for cruising so I must defer to his setup.   that was one great day sail.  After we returned from the Gulf to anchor in Boca Ciega Bay Linda cooked up a fantastic meal and we sat around for hours telling stories- some of which may have been true.  A great time with a first class sailor.   Matt

Hi Matt,
thanks for sharing another inspiring video..  so you guys really get to sail year round down there.. imagine that!    Have a great cruise over thanksgiving - looking forward to the video already..   I will save it for a day when i have just come in from shoveling snow and ready to enjoy a cup of hot chocolate..  and dream about summer :)  jt

JT,
We don't get to sail year round down here, there is about 2 1/2 months when there is no wind, July & Aug. But it is usually too hot and humid anyways. When your season is ending ours is just begining.

good point..   i imagine it must be pretty nasty in the summer..   the August heat is almost too much for me to take  in jersey!    i guess that i have to rearrange my work schedule so that i can bring the boat down your way for the winter months..   but that may actually have to wait till retirement, and i don't want to push that just yet...   jt

The trick to summer sailing in the Tampa Bay area is to wait for the sea breeze - usually around 2-3 pm - sail until sunset, anchoring for the show then sleep in the cockpit.   Sometimes in the morning you will get a land breeze - if so sail around till it ends - head for the club have a brew or two and wait for the sea breeze.   We also tend to sail a lot after sunset and into the night.

Winter is a whole different story!
