Bought another sailboat

Well, I ran across an older swing keel dinghy day-sailor at the Church junk sale last Saturday. The hull shape is reminiscent of the Com-Pac 14. So I bought it.

It's a 14' Explorer Industries, Inc (out of business since 1984) boat manufactured in 1981.  Got it for $100.00.  The compression post had rotted out, and I couldn't even reach that far under the foredeck to make a repair (Keel box in the way), so I took it apart!

Here's the compression post:

And the rot:

One of the sidestay chainplates was loose & I'll have to re-mount it:

When it's all back together, it'll be a birthday/Christmas gift to my grandson.

Tim,

Nice hull (and trailer, even if judging by the siding boards they do not seem to belong)

Just in case there is a connection, "Explorer Industries, Ltd." is a boat manufacturing company in Edmonton, Alberta, specialized in "river boats": http://www.explorerindustries.com/

Have fun with the overhaul and sailing with your grandson.

No connection between the two companies - Thanks anyway.

Tim:
You must have some spare time on your hands. Best to you in your rebuild adventures. I'm sure it'll be a grand ship when you're through.

Bob,

I'm sure you'll agree, if the Admiral senses idle hands, she'll find something or another to fill them with.  I cloaked this adventure as a gift for the grandson, and it is.  I am fortunate that she likes to sail as well (our first non nightclubbing date, 39 years ago, was sailing on a Sunfish, no less.   great fun, still have one).

Good for you, Tim. I usually get criticism about my boating habit. I reason with the Admiral thusly: I don't run around with wild women. I don't spend the grocery money at a bar. I go to work every day...you get the idea. Linda's been out on my 23 just a couple of times. It's strange that she doesn't like to sail considering that her dad sailed here in NJ for almost 70 years. Can't figure the Admiralty class out sometimes.
Keep up posted on the progress. Maybe you should create a blog? That might become a part of this "gift for your grandson", as you maintain it is.
The Sunfish may be the boat which has gotten the most folks out sailing. They are everywhere, so much fun to sail and fast. My son and I have an ongoing race between him and his 'fish and me and my Force 5. So far, he's the clear winner by a little bit although I do remind him that  he's using non-Sunfish approved equipment. He doesn't seem to care so long as he wins!
