Hello:
Below is a pic of two things I found inside the 1983 CP-16 I just bought.  I can't figure out what they are.  Can anyone help out?  The metal one appears to maybe be a tiller extension?
Thanks

jthatcher

hmm, how interesting!     not sure about  the one on top.. not sure about the one on bottom either, but it just might be a tiller extension??   i can't wait to see what others have to say!  jt

Top one...dunno.  Maybe a siphon extension (like for shipping water from the lake to wash down the deck). Best guess.

Bottom is definitely a tiller extension.

the one on top.......hmmmmmmmm

maybe something to do with the bilge pump?

Bottom one is a very nice tiller extension. Top one? Hmm...I'm gonna guess one of two things:
First, it has something to do with wind speed; some sort of gauge. Second, it looks like something I'd have made a bong out of during the misspent days of my wasted youth. But I'm gonna go with number 1.

The top one is likely a Knot meter. You place the 90^ elbow into the water to the little plate & the resultant water level in the tube is your speed over water in Knots.

I think you are right, you win! This could be the start of a whole new forum topic: "Name that boat part." Kinda like the "Mystery Boat" section of Small Craft Advisor magazine.

The one on the top is a device dingy racers used to determine their speed under sail.  It uses the Bernoulli effect i.e., when the curved portion is placed in thewater, the boat speed pushes the water up into the vertical section on which the height of the water in the tube is calibrated to provide estimated speed over the water.

The other is a tiller extender.

Thanks for the help!  I would have never guessed that the graduated device is to measure speed.

Gary

Hi there,

The top plastic part is for measuring the boats speed.   Put the white curved end in the water and the long clear plastic end vertical.  Water pressure will flow up the tube.   Where the water stops in the tube (the high point) is where you read your speed from the marking on the side of the tube.

The other piece is a tiller extension.

It's a 'SPEEDO-TUBE' for measuring how fast the boat is going in KNOTS.
Like a piot tube on an aeroplane, the water under force, because the boats going fwd, pushes the water up the tube and stops at some number indicating speed.
Something like this was shown in Burgess's book about Trailer Sailing.
Similar to a Manometer to measure gas pressure when adjusting the Proportional Control gas/air Valve on Eclipse or Maxon gas burners. Only those measure inch-water column.

The second item looks like a tiller extension. Should be a socket in the tiller.

Best guess. skip.
Additionally not only a socket for the tiller [ mine is on the bottom of the tiller ] BUT a cockpit combing socket for the 'Ball' at the end of the extension. I have a ball socket on both sides of the cockpit. At times I wish the extension was a tad longer.

Thanks.  I think the tiller is new, and doesn't have a socket, so I'll see how I can connect the extension by some other means.

Billy

you can get a socker at west marine or from the tiller manufactures website.
