Dear comrades,

Purchased a new (to us) 1989 CP23-3.

I need to replace the wooden backing block for the boweye u-bolt.

It appears to be very hard to get at.

The old block is in a million pieces; was it made from an angled piece of treated 2x4?

If anyone has done this repair, and has pointers, would you please share any info that might help.

Thank you very much,

Mark Hamman (in Branson, MO)

I just replaced my bow eye and backing board and its really not that hard.  I used a chisel to remove all of the old backing board and then made a new one by shaping an old piece of teak (or any other board....even a 2x4 would work) with a jigsaw and a sander.  You want the board to be rounded to fit the shape of the hull and flat on the other side.  The board only needs to be similar in shape to the hull.  I then mixed up some thickened epoxy and slapped it on the hull really thick.  Then push the board into the epoxy and let it dry.  I put the bow eye in during this process, but it would not be necessary.  After the epoxy is set you can sand it smooth and attach the bow eye.  I used large fender washer in addition to the small washers that came with the eye for extra protection.

When I needed to remove this eye from the bow of Wave Rover, a CP-19 to add a bow sprit kit, that was the hardest part of the whole job. Took hours of grinding, chiseling, pounding, cussing, and dealing with tight spaces after removing the little bulkhead that creates the anchor rode locker area. The tang for the dolphin had the holes for the eye and once all that old wood is gone just plain down a new chunk of pine and Marine-Tex all that back together. The reason that wood is so hard to get out is that the factory resined it in and helped all that water proofing and sealing with 3-M 5200 slow set. "I's Luv's that stuff."
