This too will pass but it sucks while waiting for it to pass. Want me to send one of my boys around to rough 'em up?

Bob,

Yes, it does stink while waiting. It will help that soon I'll be in your neck of the woods on vacation.

I heard from Kelly Hanson today. They sent the sail without the insignia thinking it was better to have the sail then not, they have an insignia on order. The loft instructions were wrong for my sail and they checked against that so they did not realize the battens were wrong or that it should have been loose footed. They are going to issue a refund and a call tag for the sail. If any 23 owner is looking for a sail it does look like a nice sail, just not what I wanted.

For some positive news... I test fit the drifter and it looks good and is what I wanted. In this picture I didn't remove my jib bag so the bottom of the sail isn't attached and the jib is making it fit a little funny.

It is a LARGE sail, the foot is about 17.5 feet. With the sail close hauled the end of the foot is basically right above the jib cleats.

The sheets will be run through the Harken 091s on the back corners that I use for my spinnaker. The angle to them looks good.

As requested the foot is high cut for better visibility.

It felt like there was no breeze at all at the dock. You couldn't feel anything on your face yet the drifter was filling.

Once you could feel a slight breeze just hand holding it the clue was pulling well.

Just an update...finally received my call tag from Kelly Hanson on Monday so their sail is on the way back to them.

Still no refund though.

I placed an order from National Sail supply on August 1st. Quoted delivery time was 3-4 weeks. At this pace it may take less time for National Sail to build a custom main sail and have it delivered then it will take Kelly Hanson to issue a refund.

Just received a notice from National Sail Supply that my order is shipping today.

Still no refund from Kelly Hanson.

Think I might be considering small claims court in your jurisdiction.

I might look into this as my main has a distinct look of age. I inquired about a used one at several different sources, Bacon among them, and none seem to have C-23 sails or anything near the size. I don't know if this a good omen or not.

I picked up my National Sail main today. Looks good, it is fully battened, cunningham, loose footed with the insignia. I have a little issue with the second reef point though. I had requested reef 'earrings' like what were on the KH sail. Those had a standard reef grommet in the luff and stainless rings on each side webbed together through the grommet. The idea being it is easier to hook the ring then the grommet.

On the National Sail it does not have reef grommets at all on the luff. Instead it has a ring webbed directly to the sail. The problem is the first reef point the ring is on starboard, the second is on port. The boom only has a hook on the starboard side so I don't think I can hook the second reef point cleanly.

"The boom only has a hook on the starboard side so I don't think I can hook the second reef point cleanly."

If I unhook the tack I can spin the tack bracket to be able to hook the second reef point but that is a little harder then I would like. Trying to find a similar tack bracket that has hooks on both sides. I need to measure the existing Dwyer part and see if anything from Rigrite will swap in. Otherwise I may just order one of their plain hooks and have it welded to the existing bracket.

It is a nice sail, lousy company though. Still don't have a refund from them. I have contacted the BBB and putting in a dispute with my CC company.

Per my order after taking off the cost of the full battens and insignia that sail would have cost $479.95.

I've been finding numerous uses for climbing runners and dogbones on my boat  Made from Spectra or dyneema they are strong, light and not very costly.  I'm using one for a tack line for my spinnaker and a couple for soft shackles to the stern cleats for spinnaker sheet blocks and one for a tack line to my furler.  You might be able to rig one to go from your tack hook inside the luff to the earring. Maybe pass it through the earring and hook both ends to the tack hook. They come in many lengths, can be bought at REI or any outdoor store that stocks climbing gear.  The most narrow are only 10MM wide and the strength is unbelievable.

Interesting..the same sail from National on my 19 uses standard grommets for all the luff and clew points, on both reef points.

Salty,

I had requested earrings in the reef points. We just had slightly different ideas on what that meant though.

"Maybe pass it through the earring and hook both ends to the tack hook. "

That might work, REI has a 6" long one that I could try until I find a bracket with hooks on both sides.

Thanks,
