Is there a small/handheld gps/nautical chart with water depth one could use going boat to boat?  I looked at the Lowrance m68cs.  It would be good to have coastal as well as inland waters?

What do people like best?

There is a thread on this. I haven't read it but this may help... It's in the boat hardware and modifications section.

I picked up a Garmin Oregon 400 a few months ago at West Marine on sale ($300). It was like half price or close to it. Small full screen chartplotter with a touch screen and built in charts for the entire US (and maybe Canada too). You may need additional mapping to get inland lakes though (it takes SD chips). Works pretty good, and the screen has got to the largest around for a hand-held. The Horizon didn't have that much room to mount anything and the hand-held turned out to be the best choice for me.

We also have a Garmin Oregon. The touch screen takes a bit of getting used to. I keep placing a point when I mean to move the screen and stuff like that. It's not as sensitive as the touchscreen on an iPhone, for example. Overall have been happy with it for what it is: a handheld solution for small, wet boats.

Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Make sure you have some sort of backup device. A hand held compass and chart of area your sailing in.

More than enough to get lost with. I run the ST-40 all the time but the chartplotter only as a check once or twice if I can not see where my destination lies.
Note the stand off ring for the compass, which is away from the juice and wires as possible. No holes inside my XL liner.
Note the Chartplotter is as high up on the dog house as possible, the higher up the narrower it gets, and it is 3-M 5200 glued in. Internal antenna.
