Does anyone know the correct measurements for the Compac 16/2 mainsail?  After raising my mainsail all the way on me new ( used) Compac 16, there is still about 1'6" of unused boom.  I also own a 16ft. Hobie and the mainsail goes all the way to the end of the boom when raised.  It just seems to me that the mainsail is smaller than it should be on the Compac.  I would appreciate any info.  Thanks

seems to be normal for 16s and 19s

Truth is the 16/2's have a slighly smaller mainsail than the version I.  But bigger jib.   Same boom on both boats.

It's long on purpose to keep the sheet angle from being too "in the way" of the captain.

Don't trust anyone else's dimensions on this if you want a new sail.  If you want to get a little bigger sail to extend the foot back to within 8" of the aft end of the boom, I don't think that will cause any trouble. Might have a reef a bit earlier, but since these boats are a little underpowered as is, a little larger sail would probably be a good thing. Just leave some room for the outhaul and a block.

salty,
Don't want to seem like a "stalker" but I clicked on your signature link to your photos and saw this....

It looks to me like the main sail goes pretty far back. I know on my old 16 the foot of the main sail was too long and did get in the way of the outhaul block.

sailinlou,
Does your 16 have the bow sprit? if not, I would not add any more to the main. to much weather helm. if so you could probably afford to add a little sail area.

But I agree w/ Salty on this one.

lol...perfectly fine to look at the album...that's why I put it here.

That's kicknbug's boat, a CP16/I.  The sail is not original which could explain a lot!  And it does look kinda long, doesn't it??

At least I'm not the only one using not proper sails!  BILL

thats my boat alright along with my biggest source of "advice". the sail is a new "rolly tasker" from national sail. it is about 6 to eight  inches from the end of the boom. it works perfectly and as you can see we have a lot of headroom (im 6'5") so thats important. also with the plastic sail slugs instead of the rope, the main raises much more smoothly. worth the 3 bills i spent and dig the fancy lazy jacks
