Tice's Shoal RonDayVoo

To all you fellow Compac-ers out there:
Due to the overwhelming success of the 'Voo of 2008 (nobody sank, vomited, or got arrested for drunk sailing) we are trying to revive this trendy get- together for 2010. This gathering, in contrast to the highly organized Carlise Lake event, is not organized at all but instead a few of us converge at Tice's Shoals, on Island Beach State Park, NJ to eat, swim, drink and tell lies about the many sailing adventures we have had.
Because this is in the planning stage, I'll throw it out there- what is the general feeling about dates? I myself love them and I particularly love date-nut bread! I'm thinking mid June sometime so as to not interfere with Carlise Lake.
   Any feedback?

Bob -

Sounds interesting. We're in Freehold, boat will be sailed off my driveway for the summer.  I have an idea where Tice's Shoal is, but not sure of what facilities are there. Is there a ramp nearby, or would I have to launch somewhere else and sail over. I've used the ramps at Barnegat Township and Ocean Gate Yacht Basin in the past (with other boats). I don't really like Ocean Gate - it's gravel past the water line. Any good concrete ramps closer? How about bathrooms, etc.?

Keep us posted about the date.

Generally speaking, which are the better ramps on Barnegat Bay? Not crazy about the 2 above.  The Barnegat Municipal ramp is pretty good, but it's a lousy drive on a summer weekend when the Parkway gets stalled with traffic.

Ron:
Be careful when sailing off the driveway...tends to scrape all the bottom paint off!
I don't know of any municipal ramps...I launch at a marina in Forked River. But maybe someone else listening (Peter?) will have more knowledge.
Tice's Shoals has bathrooms but no other facilities. That's what I like about it. It can get crowded in the summer but we usually go further south than all the yahoos so it's ok.
Best to leave super early in the summer to beat the traffic. More later,

The municipal ramp in Barnegat Township is a good one. It's about 1 block north of Mariner's Marina. I'm trying to find a good ramp north of that - say Tom's River or ??  I've used the one in Ocean Gate Yacht Basin (on Toms River) a number of times, but as I said before - it's gravel past the waterline (and on the short side as well). My Telstar's trailer tires (or someone else) dug some tracks into the gravel 2 years ago and it was a little tricky getting it out safely. Don't like to see the trailer and boat shift side to side (by as much as a half foot) when I'm pulling it out.

There must be a ramp in Toms River somewhere.

There are a couple ramps in the Forked River area. There is one at Townsends Marina off East Lacey Road that will allow a launch with the stick up. The very best ramp is at the Lacey Elk's Club off Beach Blvd, but there is a tree in the way, so you have to rig up after launching. I always used this one and motored to my dock not too far away and rigged there. Great ramp with long concrete, but you have to be able to rig in the water. You are welcome to rig at my dock. Trixie's Marina, just West of Berkeley Island Park in Bayville has a good ramp  and is NW of Tices a couple miles. I'll check around for more.

Thanks Peter. The Horizon is one of the easier boats to rig. Raise and pin the mast, pin and clamp the head stay, remove sail cover, raise the gaf and sail, then sail. Before or after launching really wouldn't matter that much.

I'll check out some of the ramps you mentioned on Forked River. I was there about 2 years ago looking at both ramps and marina's for my trimaran, but wound up at Ocean Gate as a rigged parking lot boat 100 feet from their ramp the 1st year, and in the water at Lighthouse Point Marina the 2nd. Wasn't really happy at the Ocean Gate ramp and I'd rather keep this boat on the driveway so I can sail whenever and wherever I want to. That's basically why I bought it. I'm sort of spoiled now - some of the ramps down in SW Florida are really nice. Long, concrete all of the way out, a raised lip on the end, and enough room to tie up the boat at the end of the ramp while I park the truck and trailer.

Is the ramp at Lacey's Elk Club private or open to the public?

The Elk's ramp is available to the general public and I believe there is a seven buck fee. I always liked this ramp- the concrete goes out quite far and I've never had a depth problem at any tide stage launching or retrieving my old CP19 (Beagle I). The ramp at Trixie's is also a very workable one, and has the added benefit of being only a few minutes from one of my favorite Barnegat anchorages at Berkeley Island. Hope to see you at the infamous Bob23's even more infamous Tices RonDayVoo. That man knows how to organize a get-together, even though he be inclined to imbibe a bit too much o' the spirits!

I had to drive from Chicago to Tom's River, NJ to pick up a race car over a long week end. Don't think I'll be making it to the big salt water pond. What about sharks when swimming? I hear these critters like to peel off swimming shorts, much to the ladies delight!

If I get a CP to sail by the "RonDayVoo", I'll be there!

I've been out in the bay sailing a few times in the last week on a friends boat.  Its a lovely place to sail, and the winds have been great!

Looking forward to it...
Jaime

Skip: Sharks in the ocean are a myth. We keep them all in Trenton, the state capitol. When we run out of room there, we send 'em down to Washington.
Jaime: Both kinds of sailors are welcome...Compac owners and those who wish they were!

There are a couple of other ramps. One at Good Luck Marina. I don't know anything about the ramp but call Roy Voss and ask.
The other is just south of Berkeley shores and north of Trixies. I do not remember what it is like but my kids lauch their power boats there. My son has a 23 ft Maxim and does just fine.

Maybe this sunner we can make Tices Shoal.

Keel Joy is in the water but morred at the dock ( Ocean Gate Yacht Basin ) due to electrical issues. Hopefully get sailing next week.
Fair winds to all.

Bob -

When you get a chance in the next week or so, could you put together some info about the proposed Rendezvous and the Tices Shoal site. Maybe exactly where we will meet up (lat / lon), the amount of water there, any shoals we should avoid, any docks there or do we need an inflatible, etc. I can probably make most dates as long as I know in advance when it will be. Thanks.

I spent the last 2 summers on Barnegat in the trimaran, but I tended to avoid some of these shallower spots. The Telstar draws 5 feet 4 inches with the board down. The pop-up rudder (which is adjustable) has to be down around 30 inches to get me any real steerage. I think the Horizon needs about 3 feet for the rudder.

I've probably seen most of these ramps already. I'll try launching at some of them starting in a week or two. The 20 foot Horizon needs less water and a shorter ramp the the trimaran, whose length with the trailer is about 36 feet.

Ron:
The RonDayVoo2010 is still in the planning stage. 39 degrees 49.660' N   074 degrees 05.759'W. That's pretty shallow so some of us stay out a bit. 5' 4" might be a problem...better bring the Horizon.
This is a unorganized event. No races, no schedule, no t-shirts. As the song goes, "Nowhere to go and all day to get there" probably sums up the itinerary. We usually try to anchor close so we can rope over and tie up together for dinner and hydration.
I'm gonna look in the Nautical Almanac and try to plan around a full moon rising sometime after sunset. The first time we were out there, that's what we experienced, but purely by coincidence.
I hope many folks can make it. Who know? Maybe I can convince Ke3in to design a t-shirt!
