Glad your note was legit... I'd hate to see this site go down.  As for Dave: He is still registered on Sailboat Owners and active there within a few days.  I sent him a note.  I'll let you know if he replies.

Steve,

The email I received was from register.cpyoa@gmail.com, and it appears legit.  I had changed my notification settings recently, and it was the first time I received one of those.

I get email all the time to notify me when someone has replied to a topic I started or that I am watching.  The legitimate sender is register.cpyoa@gmail.com.   Caution is always advisable when going through your email.  I never use embedded links in email.  I never reply to email with account information of any kind.

If anyone does find out what happened to Dave I hope you will post that information...

Okie Bob, I would search the source before I would believe it is legit. I have never gotten an email from this website. As for the wipe the slate clean- I wonder if it was done by a professional hacker. That looks like some things I have seen IT pro's do. I can only guess why....

Huh, didn't notice that...  I see he was last active on Dec 13th though.  Maybe he'll answer the note I sent and tell us what is going on.

Steve,

I'm getting "1" were his posts used to be on SailboatOwners.com

I did not take any action as regards his or any other account.

Sounds like, if it occurred across multiple boards, that it is something that only that person should be able to do. Or, could only be done by someone with access to all of his passwords. Or he used one weak password for every account, and a malicious someone guessed it.

On another subject:
What about those Yahoo Com-Pac sailors who jumped through all the hoops and are still only able to log on as a GUEST?
Can these guys join up at CPYOA?
HOW?

Maybe Dave [dserrell] could sign up 'through this back door' using the Yahoo site again?

thanx skip.

Hi Skip -

WRT this CPYOA forum: Are you talking about people only having 'Guest' privileges here?

When folks sign up here, to keep spammers out, their account has to be approved before they can log in and post.

Used to be, we had 4 or 5 CP guys who helped me by filtering thru the good and bad applications. Nowadays, it is solo mio ;) who does that, and I am trying to do so on a schedule of checking applications every week to 10 days, running thru the list, checking IP addresses and such, trying to make sure we keep spammers out.

Some people I can tell are legit via a Google search of their user name or etc..., and approve without any further action. Some people that I can't be sure of prior to approving, I'll send a email to, to get a response to make sure they are real sailing folks (spammers won't bother).

If there are people who didn't get approved, maybe they didn't get the email from me - some ISP's will flag email from an unknown Gmail account as spam. Anyone who might have slipped thru the cracks this way can re-Register, and send a note to register.cpyoa@gmail.com , and I will gladly approve their account.

I no longer have anything to do with what happens regarding the Yahoo group. I used to have some Moderator access there, but the Yahoo Group ownership changed hands, and I was summarily 'demoted' :) to just a normal member. The new ownership there is probably a good thing - the old owner I could *never* get in touch with to get anything done (like approving new/other mods), and the group suffered because of it. I haven't looked in there in a while; I hope that with new ownership they are doing better. :)
