Hey Guys,

I'm new to the forum & am interested in purchasing a CP-16 as a first sailboat.   I live in the Raleigh-Durham area of N.C. and am hoping to find one within a couple hours drive.  In order to keep the price down, a fixer-upper would be great.

My email address:  pysawyer@gmail.com

Thanks for any help.

Hello PY,

Sailingtexas.com has classifieds with boats all over the country. There is a CP16 for sale in Richmond VA right now.

   Classifieds: http://www.sailingtexas.com/cboats.html

   1980 Compac 16, Richmond, Virginia, $2,800: http://www.sailingtexas.com/scompac16179.html

It seems overpriced to me, maybe you can talk him down.

Good luck in finding a boat.

Nate

Found this one in NC Craigs list ,, pricey.
http://eastnc.craigslist.org/boa/1496975888.html

That one had better be in extraordinary condition for being a 1985. Looking back through the archives at SailingTexas, I only found 4 CP16's that went for $5,500 or more. Two of them were 1998 XL models (with centerboards). The other two were 1990 models, in very good condition.

1998 XL (Raven Rig) - $8,700: http://www.sailingtexas.com/scompac16145.html
1998 XL - $6,750: http://www.sailingtexas.com/scompac16152.html

1990 - $5,900: http://www.sailingtexas.com/scompac16143.html
1990 - $5,500: http://www.sailingtexas.com/scompac16119.html

Keep an eye on Craig's List...  I bought a 1988 Com-Pac 16/III last spring for $2,000. Boat, motor, sails, trailer and in excellent condition.  Keep your eyes open and you should be able to find a good one between two and three thousand if you are patient.  There were a lot of them made and most are still on the water as they are very well made.

PY, welcome to the forum.  You'll have no trouble finding one.  Be patient for the right one, there are plenty of them around.

I sold my 82 for $3500.   This may seem like a lot, but considering the condition and modifications to it, it was a good deal for the buyer.

-09 outboard
-IDA rudder assembly
-Nearly new sails with genoa
-newer motor mount and swim ladder
-Roller furler
-Trunk mounted cam cleats for halyard and roller furler line
-Teak cockpit railings
-Cabin door made out of Starboard
-Woodwork perfect
-Trailer exc condition, newer tires, spare, light kit
-Genoa tracks with bullseye cam cleats
-New blocks all around
-Gallon of bottom paint
-Windex 15
-Newer running rigging
-Hull in very nice shape, garage kept over winters
-Other little little things like a lunch tray and sail cover, etc .

All of these items were done in 2008 or 2009.  When I got the boat it was a standard as they come and in good shape overall.
Really I took care of everything that had to get done and added some niceties, so the boat was 100% ready to go. That makes a difference in the selling price as the new owner won't have to restore anything (just de-winterize and go).

I think you have to look at the overall condition and the modifications to make a good judgement on price.  $1800-$2400 is a good price on 16's that don't need major work but perhaps have older equipment and also are not perfect, but still sailable.  A $700 boat is probably going to need much more put into it to equal a $3K or $4K boat.  With that said, often folks think their stuff is worth more than it is and ask too much.  That new car you buy really is worth 10% less then moment you drive off a lot!

i have been informed that the new price for my 81 cp16 was abouit $4100. i bought it two years ago for $1600. i consider my self lucky since it was complete, in nice shape, a nice trailer and three outboards (old they are work they do). i think the fact that the cp16 isnt currently produced has given the old boats some added value. that coupled with the fact that few trailer sailboats are made as good as compacs also helps their appeal. the first thing my wife noticed is how stable the boat was an how secure it felt under sail. a race boat with a planing hull it isnt, a comfortable cruiser with simple rig that is easy to sail it is. two things would cause me to sell my 16. a windfall of money that would enable me to buy a bigger boat and moor it, or a physical problem that would end my sailing carreer. by the way the bigger boat i would buy is also a com-pac.

Found my 16 for 1000$ (she wanted 1200$,I had 800 in my pocket, but would not come lower because it came with a never used 1996 evinrude 2hp) I spent about 700 to make her seaworthy ( new mainsail, swim ladder, refurb trailer, new electrical system, turnbuckles, etc...) she 's now as good as brand new.  Happy  Hunting   You can't go wrong with a COM-PAC !   BILL

PY, after owning many sailboats, I know you will never be sorry getting a CP16 no matter the condition or price. I have found that you don't find the boat, the boat will find you.....God speed.....Phil

PY, There is a Compac dealer and boatyard in NC that may be able to help. The Sailboat Company in Richlands. Their web site has lots of info to help the Compac sailor also-  see: http://www.ipass.net/sailboat/
(check out the question and answer area to the left of the web page )
I used to sail a 1981 Compac 16 which I bought new, sold it after awhile, went up to a 25' boat and now am very happy with another 1983 CP-16 . A very safe boat for daysailing but I really like to overnight cruise on it. Good Luck

Great website... Thanks for the link!

Keep an eye on the Com-pac sites, craigslist, and maybe even publications like the thrifty nickel and bargain mart, etc. I actually found my 16 in the on-line version of the bargain mart.

You can go to http://raleigh.craigslist.org/, then type sailboat into the search window and it will pull up every add with the word 'sailboat' in it. Then take the 'boat' off and just leave 'sail' in the search window for a new search and it will pull up a few more. There's got to be plenty of good sailboats all around you there. Maybe you'll hit it lucky and find a Com-pac 16.

I just did a quick search as described above and found a 1991 CP16 in Florida. No price or exact location given, but truly a lovely little yacht... http://raleigh.craigslist.org/boa/1506306351.html

The main thing is to check the adds frequently; every day if at all possible, and be prepared to move quickly when you find a deal. The good ones will be going fast, so you'll have to go even faster to snag one. When you find one that you want, and the asking price seems about right, offer half that as a starting point and work from there. When I bought mine, the seller was asking $1500. I offered $700 and he took it!

Best of luck,
Milt

Try www.craiglook.com. This site allows you to search CraigsList using keywords and distance radius - much easier than searching from craigslist.com. BTW, I looked at the one in Richmond and it's in very nice condition - and the price is down to $2400, including motor. I almost bought it but then found one in GA that needs a little work for $1000, including motor. Good luck!

Hey, very cool! I never heard of that one before, and it really works! I gotta give you some good karma for that. Thanks, Schwartz...
