How to stop seagrass blocking through hull fitting

We have a 27/2 and sail in Barnegat Bay, NJ.  We apparently went through a bog of seagrass which blocked the hose to the engine.  The engine began overheating.  Does anyone have any suggestions for this type of problem, other than stay away from seaweed bogs., which is difficult to do in Barnegat Bay (very shallow bay)?

I too have a Com-Pac 27/2, 1994 model named Keel Joy. I sail in the barnegat Bay but have never had the seagrass problem you speak of. Maybe a screen over the intake would help. Turns out the return of the seagrass is a good indication that the bay is getting healthier.
My engine did overheat ( I only run it for 10-15 min to get out to the bay from Berkeley Shores) but it turned out to be a corroded heat exchanger.
Good luck finding a solution.
