Doug,

Location seems easy enough.  Sidelights on the front of the bowpulpit, stern light on the stern pulpit if you have one, steaming light 1/2 to 2/3 of the way up the mast.

Watch out for sidelights that advertise "for powerboats up to <some size>" and don't mention sailboats.  They don't provide enough light when a sailboat is heeled and are not legal for sailboats.  Look for "sailboats and powerboats" in the product description.

I like LED but they are still quite expensive.  The Aqua Signal are good lights at reasonable prices and have the brackets available if you don't have the mounting brackets welded to the bow and stern pulpit from the factory (my 23 has, not sure how the 16 came).

Thanks,
I agree that the LED lights are best....but like you said, a bit expensive.
On this older 1983 CP16 there is not a cross bar on the bow pulpit, I have to consruct one.  Which I will do.

Up on this cross bar that I install will be best....out of the way of the forestay and up for visibility.
Thanks again,

Doug,
The rear white light does not have to be in the center of the boat, if you boat only has corner pulpits aft then place it on one of those (the right one seems to be most often chosen). The lights that the CP 23 have are great- simple yet enough. You might ask the factory how much a set of them would cost.
They also do not have to be  high on the boat- leave that to the steaming and anchor light. :)
