Seaman Deuce

Having lived in the "Sailing Capital of NC" (Oriental) for the past 4+ years I finally decided to get a sailboat .   So,  I bought a 1983 COMPAC-16, Hull 1915, this past Tuesday.  It is in good condition and came with an above average trailer.

I'm not new to water, just sailing. Have only been under sail one time and that was with a friend a couple Wednesdays ago. Retired from the Navy but I was a Ship's Secretary not a Bos'n'  Do have plenty of sea kayaking experiences (how does 30-40 MPH winds and 2-4 swells sound?).

Figure to name her Seaman Deuce since that's what we called rookies.  Term "Dumb as a Seaman Deuce" sound familiar?  But I have lots of friends down here who are more than happy to teach me.

And as I say ending my kayaking boards ,

Any day on the water is a great day,

Cal

Cal:
Welcome!! I didn't know Oriental was the sailing capitol of NC. Well, one is never too old to learn. I've never sailed a 16, but I'd love to. I have the big brother to it- a 23.
And, you are right- any day on the water is a good day. Each one is different- I don't think that Iv'e ever had 2 identical sails. That's the beauty of sailing.
Again, welcome. Here, you find a wealth of wisdom, wit, and wise-guys- or a combination of the 3!

Welcome Cal,

Watching the news last night and was wondering how many of you on the east cost still had your boats in the water ?

I was watching all the snow reports, didn't look to good for sailing .........

Wait a minute, some one on an earlier post was asking, "have you ever sailed in the snow", may be this is what he was suggesting ?

Welcome to the Compac Yacht Forum....  I too own a 1983 CP16 Hull number 1994.   Had to replace the main and jib this summer.  Love the boat .... Live in Wisconsin so I have plenty of different lakes to explore.   Anything I can do to help let me know, either here or email me.
Enjoy your new boat, she be a good one fer sure.

Funny to think an Air Force guy has more "sailing" experience than a Navy guy!  Welcome!

Yeah, but I bet I have more "at sea" time than you do especially those long 30-45 day transits on Water Hours because the "evaps" broke down  and the tech rep couldn't deliver parts in the middle of the Pacific or IO.

Hey, I don't hold anything (much) against the USAF - they took a brother and a sister off the streets for 20 years each.

Cal,
Welcome to the forum.  What a great place to live!!  8)  I took some sailing lessons in Oriental quite a while back.  Had a great experience.

I'm over in the foothills of NC.  Lake James is down to record levels, more than 8'.  The finger pier at the north end is on the ground.  Just a few years ago there was 8' of water going over the spillway.

Dreaming of the day I can sail the Sounds again.  Enjoy.  Welcome again.

Welcome Cal, It's great to have another "new' sailor on the board, and I think you'll like your 16, shes very foregiving and a great boat to learn on.        HAPPY SAILING   BILL

Seaman Deuce

Thanks for all the encouraging words.  Once I get over rehabbing this shoulder I had operated on the week after I got the Seaman Deuce, I'll s-l-o-w-l-y but surely start learning to sail.

In the interim I've read "Annapolis Book of Seamanship" and can't wait to see if the DVDs are just as good.  Also doing a few odds 'n' ends, such as making a mast rest for long hauls, learning to raise and lower the mast and set the boon by myself, cleaning rust off parts of the trailer and next on the list is a couple of Burgess' suggestions - sun canopy and bimini screen (got a fabric outlet up the road that supposedly has remnants of sunbrella material).

Need to install the battery tester (with 12V plug-in and light swtiches) and work on my design for a cabinet to fit the forepeak.  I figure on something simple with a couple or three sliding drawers with individual exterior drawer stops.  Just want to maximize space use while having the ability to sort things out.  Anyone do this before?  If so, care to share your experience?

And for the potty I'll get me a machine gun ammo and toss in some plastic bags.  It's small enough to fit under and between the bunk area by the battery and, from my experience in RVN, definitely watertight which means odor tight.

Y'all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  And I'll still waiting for snow down here on the NC Coast.

Dan

Hello Cal:
I am a new guy also. Sailed a lot with others in my youth. Always wanted to have my own boat but got distracted with so called other important matters. Finally signed up for sailing lessons last May at Oriental Sailing School. Fell in love with the 2 Compaq's at the Marina there. Is the black one still there? Kept checking with the Com-Pac dealer in Richlands NC. Finally found a 16 on EBay in Aug. Bought it and brought it back to Charlotte NC just in time for the drought. Closed all of the ramps on Lake Norman in Sept. I did get her out twice this year and am ready to go as soon as possible again.

We were in Oriental last weekend checking out the sailing scene.  We want to bring out Suncat down there this year for at least a week.  The public ramp looks very good.  If you put in the boat there, where is a safe place to keep your car and trailer while you are on the water?

I sailed in Florida last spring break and was wondering also if the weather is good for sailing in Oriental the last week of March?  It would be a lot shorter drive!

Hope you enjoy your new boat.  Oriental seems like a great place to be in a sailboat!

Seaman Deuce

The public boat ramp at the foot of Midyette Street is very safe for leaving your vehicle and trailer.  I've never heard of anyone losing anything while parked there.  You got that group of condos overlooking the parking lot.

As far as March weather, here's some readings from several kayak trips I led this Spring.  I'll let you be the judge!

27FEB07: Beaufort, 53 F, Wind: NNE 5 MPH, Sky:  Clear
17MAR07:Neuse River, 37-44 F, Wind: W 12 to 20 MPH, Sky:  Mostly Cloudy
28MAR07: Neuse River, 75 - 82 F< Wind: W 5 MPH, Sky:  Overcast
