Genoa Hardware

I purchased my 81 Com Pac with a 150 genoa. I have yet to use it.  Do I need to purchase any additional hardware?  I have what I guess is the stock setup with two jam cleats on the front of the cockpit coaming.  There is nothing currently mounted on the top of the cockpit coaming running amidships as Carol has referred to.  Having never used a genoa, I would appreciate any tips on how it is best rigged and used?
Thanks,
Keith

HI Keith:

I have a 16-3 with the jib fair lead track.  The track allows you to change the shape of the jib (and especially the Genoa) according to the conditions.  Having the jam cleat in one location will not facilitate good sail handling.

I found Annapolis Performance Sailing had the appropriate rig for the 16.  That's the sail track, which flexes into the curve of the coming, the jib car and the fair lead with a cam cleat.  In fact, I replaced my swiveling fair lead and cleat last year.

Hope this helps.  Good luck,

Paul

I use a genoa with the track on the coaming... I would recommend getting the track from ComPac as it will conform the the curve of the coaming.  It's going to be "fun" to install... I don't envy you... perhaps you could hire some small people to do it for you.  But seriously, there is foam under the coaming and there have been several posts here about how to deal with it... look under repaining genoa track.
Good luck.
For now, you might run a block on a line from the stern cleat to get a better (further back) sheeting point.

Thanks for the feedback on how to best use the Genoa.

Dale,
You make a good point.  Good idea to check with Hutchins.  But, I think they used Ronstan hardware, which APS sells.  The track should make the curve nicely.

RE: the foam, I recently removed the entire section from under the starboard coaming as  it was falling down anyway.  Surprisingly, the screws holding the track are not through bolted.  That must be a thick section of hull under the track.

Hope this helps,

Paul

Good to know as I have a track with a broken screw (third one in from the end).  I have been debating weather to drill and fill of leave well enough alone.
