Hi everyone!

I can't wait to get out sailing for the season - but I also have already started my list of "to-do" for end of the season (off season).

One thing I've been thinking about but haven't seen a lot of examples of is a custom paint scheme for the 16.

I would love to see pics, or links to pics of boats.

For the purposes of this discussion, "custom" can be as simple as just a different color from the factory white.

Also, since there are tons of examples of boats with custom paint, and since I'm not good at envisioning a different boats paint on the 16, I'm hoping you all can provide pics/links to the C16 only?

Sure appreciate all the help!

please don't paint it black.  after the 1st "pirates" movie debuted, i saw a small sailboat painted completely black, with black sails and it's name, of course, the black pearl.  i wish i could have seen them walk barefoot across the deck on a hot sunny day! :o

my thought is a small boat should be a bright color.  our small 15'r (non compac) is a bright yellow.  i've seen red c16s and they look good.

best color i've seen on a compac by far is salty19's.
Oriental, "The Sailing Capitol of North Carolina".

I've always thought the West Wight Potter 15 came in a bunch of fun bright colors.  Comparable size boat to the CP16, just google West Wight Potter 15 and go to images. You'll notice the deck and cockpit are kept white to reduce heat and keep maintenance/cleaning easy.

Thanks for the hints and pointers. I'll check around some more. I am concerned about heat for sure. Right now I'm thinking: all white above rub-rail, navy blue hull sides and a bright yellow boot stripe. Yes - very conservative/classic.

However, it's still on my mind to try something a bit more "fun" like ice blue, pale yellow, sea foam green or even silver with a red or black stripe maybe? Time will tell! :D

Hello, 007!

I am working on completely refitting my recently purchased '87 CP-16.  I like the suggestion to look at the WWP-15 or 19 for color schemes.  I too love the bright colors.  I plan to paint my boat bright red, and I am naming her "Lil' Red".  She was not named before, so I don't have to go through the long process of removing her from Neptune's roster.  I think I can get away with a can of PBR.   I am throwing that in, since it seems to be the beer of choice on this forum!

I plan to start stripping my bottom paint and begin sanding this week.  I will post pictures as I go along.

Good luck!

Just a suggestion that if you are to choose a dark color for your hull, spend the money for a catalyzed polyurethane paint.  Perfection Plus, Awlgrip, Imron, there are others.  Yes quite a bit more expensive but will have UV resistance that will be far greater than the alternatives.  You will see that fade and chalk after a very short time with less expensive paint alternatives.  While lighter colors are somewhat less susceptible to that outcome I would still use the cat poly for its toughness.

Hey Rusty,

We have one of the few 16's that came from the factory in beige. We also have another boat in white. I know it sounds picky, but if you're in an area the gets much sun and heat, even that little difference is felt underfoot. Def keep it white on the topsides. As far as the dark hull, pretty for sure but also collects heat, though less of a concern with a 16 cuz most folks aren't below deck much. Most importantly, as others have alluded to, the paint will fade and not keep that spiffy look long. There is a good reason the vast majority of boats are white! Boring maybe but practical.

Good luck!

I didn't know only a "few" 16s came from the factory in beige.  I purchased my 81 used but it was beige.  Is there a way to find the original color?
