As a bit of a cold weather beater I got out my chartbooks and hooked my old 2005 Garmin GPSMAP 192 to a battery and programed in some new waypoints and routes that I may travel this summer. The same day I read that older GPS units may have a problem when the 19 year GPS date cycle resets this April 6th.  Would that route programming be for nothing? I wanted to get accurate info on how the GPs epoch reset wil affect my GPS. From all I'm reading, only the day/ date functions will be be wrong for those affected units. Becuse of the binary system used, days can only be programed for 19+ years.  Older gps units can be affected depending on age and how they were initially programed.  As a result the day and date shown on affected units will be different than the actual day/date. My hand held 20 yer old Garmin will be affected. My 2005 era GPSCHART 192 may be fine for 6 more years depending what base point ws initially used. I read a post that said newer units, 2010 and after, should be fine.
As I understand it the affected GPS units will still function but the days will be wrong. It looks like one can still loctate one"s position and chart and follow a course. I'm gussing things like moon phases and tide info won't be right. This reset would not affect phone or ipad apps.
