Hello all:  I just bought a compac 23'  (1979)  It needs some work so I am sure to be using this great resource.  Love to sail, sailed in Rockport Texas and Galveston, and finally was able to convince the "owner" to buy a boat for Lake Dillon Colorado.   Now I can't wait for the snow to melt.

Phil,

Keep us posted on how your CP-23 does on Lake Dillon.  I currently sail one on Galveston Bay out of Kemah but plan to retire back to my Colorado home in two to three years and have been wonderig whether we should bring the 23 back with us or sell it before we leave Texas.

I know the winds on Dillon have always been flukey and with the low water Dillon has every few years it has always looked like it has many opportunities for a keelboat to run aground so wasn't sure it would be a good home for WindRush.  Let us know how it works out for a CP-23 location.

Will do.  Boy do I miss sailing in Galveston.  I used to be a DA there.  We sailed a Flying Scot on Offats Bayou etc etc.   Please eat a "Spot" burger for me asap.  A little Dibellas wouldn't hurt either!

Lake Dillon has been good sailing the last few years.  I think the shoal draft of the 23 will be uselful.  Most sailboats have much deeper draft.  I won't be the fastest boat, but I have little kids and the stability is much desired.

Thanks for the encouragement about bringing my 23 to Dillon.  I'm sure you'll like yours; it's a great boat, and as you say, a really stable boat.  Enjoy!

The water on Lake Dillon for the past several years have averaged 6 inches above the "Glory Hole" all summer with no signs of slowing down. A lot of larger sailboats on that lake with plenty of space for a Colorado lake. I sail a 16 (Prospectors Mirth) though and have my favorite spot on a sandy beach area on the Frisco side. You will have no problem with your 23. Your right about the wind here. It can change 620 degrees in a half hours time. Just keep in mind the Frisco Marina is eaiser to launch then the Dillion side. They are opening a new Bar on the Frisco Marina side this summer to compete with the Tiki Bar on the Dillon side. My neighbor runs the Water Taxi to ferry people back and forth between the two marinas if you want to try them both out and let someone else do the driving. Probably see you out there this summer.

Cool.  I am happy to meet a fellow Dillon Sailer. We rented out of both marinas last year and it became obvious we loved the lake (too bad you can't overnight thought- can you?)  We are going to be moored at Frisco and know about the new bar /food place.  I think frisco is coming along  and will soon compete with Dillon!  I almost bought a 16 out of The Anchorage, but it sold out from under me last year (was it you!)

I know the 16 you speak about from the Anchorage. It wasn't me who bought it but I talked to the gal that works/owns the place about it. I had bought mine from the owner of the Chatfield Marina. They were going to use it as a rental and decided it was too nice to do that with. I have had several people when I am in the parking lot of Frisco ask me if my 16 came from the Chatfield Marina. I just find it strange that people remember these sailboats and where they have seen them.

The Frisco Marina is really coming along nicely! So well that I love hanging out there more and more all the time. They have a nice grassy lawn there to hang out on. Getting to know the Marina Gods (Dock workers) makes things nice too. Sometimes I get a slip for a couple of weeks for a case of beer. There is a couple of 16's that launch from Frisco and one is on a mooring on that side.

I am not sure if you can overnight on the lake or not. I have always thought about it but never did it. I recently sold my house in Keystone and spending all my time down in Denver now (Edge of Broomfield to be exact) so I find myself thinking about overnighting on Dillon more and more. If I find anything out about it I will let you know.

I will keep my eyes out for a 23 this season and maybe get to meet you in person.

Where is this Sandy Beach you speak of. We are looking for a spot to let the kiddos run around and have a picnic.  Is it accessable to a 23?

(PS I live in Superior, so we are almost neighbors)

Where do you keep your boat? I am looking for some off season storage.

The sandy beach area is more like a silty area but nice as sand anyway. You can walk in the water and around the edge barefoot. It's a fun area to hang out or walk around. It is located on the Frisco side. When you leave the "No Wake Zone" of the Frisco marina it is on the port side about 11 o'clock. It is located in a small cove area but it isn't hidden and you will see a small trail for walking up a hill and overlooks the lake. The lake bottom there is very soft (It's the only soft area I have found on that lake and I have seen just about everywhere there in my canoe) and stays deep until about 6 or 7 feet from waters edge. My 16 slips right in there and when I jump out I am in about 2 to 3 feet of water and my keel is on the ground. Not sure how deep the keel is on the 23 but again the bottom is soft in that area and the water is clear so you can see the bottom comming up on you real well.

For boat storage I use Barbers storage (303-466-9389) located on 120th east of Sheridan street. They have 2 big scary dogs they let out at night. The actual storage area they seem to keep up pretty good. It only costs me $30.00 a month but who knows how long the storage area will be there. City and County of Broomfield is going to condemn the land and let Walmart build there. So that storage will be likely be lost in the next 6 months to a year. Not much storage otherwise between Broomfield and Boulder. There is a couple of storage lots on Old Wadsworth Blvd south of 120th and driving by there today their sign says they have vacancy. Don't know anything about how secure it is there though.

Not too far from Superior but also not the most convenient. Hope this information helps you out though.
