New Tiller at a Bargain Price

The tiller on my 1983 Com-Pac 16, Hull Number 2059, delaminated to the point of no return, and I decided to make a replacement.  I went to Lowe's to find a suitable wood and stumbled across a hardwood wheelbarrow handle that fit perfectly into the existing hardware on my CP16.  The price was right at about $12, and the length allowed me to have a longer tiller.

Very interesting.  I never thought about this as hardwood option.  Will take a look this weekend as I want to make a filler platform for the cabin to expand sleeping space, and this may be best economical choice.

Yes.  It was in stock at my local Lowe's and is serving well on my boat.  I wish now after using it for several outings that I had not shortened it as much. I reduced the length by about 8 inches.  Leaving it a little longer would allow me to shift steering positions more to stay in the shade of the bikini on different headings in the intense sun here near Pensacola.

Just add a tiller extension to your wheelbarrow handle. 

I just love staying in the shade of a Bikini on any heading!

Good morning, since you have an older cp16,mine is a 1989,I thought you may be able to assist me with an issue that has arisen. Went to my boat yesterday and noticed that my cushion on the port side was damp. Also noticed droplets hanging from the underside of the port seat. We'be had a lot of rain and I was wondering if the water got into the cabin thru the hatch. Hatch was closed and locked. Contacted Mr. Hutchins and he felt the rain worked its way in thru the hatch. Any ideas?

Hi, Jerry, I feel your pain!  I've owned more than a few sailboats over the years, and keeping them dry inside has always been an issue.  My solution for my Com-Pac 16 is a simple rectangular cover with grommets around the edges.  It's tied to the trailer only when parked and keeps the inside dry and protects the finish on the wood trim.  Hope this helps.  Regards, Glynn
